Why does mainstream metal culture suck so much?

Going with the flow is the best thing anyone can do(I finally know), regardless I no longer hate cultures. I either like something or do not. Mainstream metal can be awful just aswell as underground. Either you can play and create or you can't regardless.

There is better music to listen to than just sitting around listening to underground metal or even current mainstream music. Don't get me wrong I like underground and mainstream metal bands. I do not know much about current music unless it is older bands. I am concentrating on finding bands that really craft and evolve there music because they are genuine musicians and want to be around because they strive. If you want to be around making music you can't always avoid your surroundings or go against the grain just because you want to be 'metal'. Music is about making music not about being something.

^HA I've been watching that crap too. It's all a bunch of hair bands. Theres a few exceptions but they aren't even trying to delve into the underground.

Hair bands aren't even metal. its sissyfied pop music marketed as metal to braindead teenage girls.

in my opinion the mainstream culture is completely fucking ignorant, they only consist of bands that have catchy lyrics are very repetitive riffs

in other words, the people that are into mainstream metal and nu metal show no respect towards true talent and its funny whenever i play any death metal they say its the stupidest music ever

Death metal is not an accessible genre. I kind of like this because it's a good way to stand out from the crowd. I however try to refrain from calling music of other genres "bad" or "untalented" because I know that's how people would react when listening to Death metal and I don't want to be a hypocrite.

Hip hop sucks though :kickass: :kickass: :kickass: :kickass:

Mainstream anything is like this. Art, TV shows, movies, etc...it's all about trends and milking them until they are finished.

A fresh band will come out and turn heads.
People flock to it.
Others copy it.
Labels and studios sign as many other copycats as they can to get in on the sound.
Scene becomes watered down.
Quality stuff is hard to find because so many bands are just copying the sound, and not adding anything new to it. Rush jobs.
Sound loses interest and becomes stale.

Repeat

Studios don't care about quality, just do what they can to get rich quick...it's all about promotion and advertising. They don't need to invest time and money into quality bands, because one hit wonders give them the most bang for their buck. People flock to anything popular - TV, movies, clothes, etc...good or bad, people just want to be in on what is "in"

They aren't called hair bands neither. It's called Hair Metal. Or Glam Metal, and it is metal, just not a very tr00 style.

Fag Metal has always been my name for them. My thoughts on mainstream metal culture:

Problem 1- The bands. I'm sorry most of the bands to grace Ozzfest's second stage (and the mainstage this year) are not metal, they are manufactured crap.

Problem 2- Places like Hot Topic sell T-Shirts of Metal bands whilst selling those crappy baggy chain covered pants, making people think that those are metal. Not to mention it is owned by the Abercrombie and Bitch people.

Problem 3- Metal is/was not supposed to be mainstream culture. The manufactured bands of the late 80's and the nu-metal bands of today have to accomodate mainstream tastes which are certainly not metal.

Good post Phantom Lord

That goes back to what I was saying. It's just Ozzfest cashing in. Why bring in a variety of solid proven metal acts when they can just bring in whatever bands are exposed on MTV and Hot Topics.

The majority of people listen to MTV and the Radio, so they'll go there just to see what they think is metal.

I also don't think some people here can get on a high horse about this idea, as they themselves like to play judge and jury as to what is cool, and what is not. Same concept...only MTV and Ozzfest is telling people what is cool.

Because mainstream culture is a refuge for the weak minded. They can just go with the flow and do what everyone else is doing with the minimum of thought involved.

Especially mainstream metal culture: the lowest common denominator.

Calling all dumbshits.

Just to be fair...let's not bash just the mainstream followers. I mean, real metal isn't on the radio. It's not on TV. It's not easily accessible. Heck, even us metalheads had to acquire the taste over time before we grew to love it.

Don't bash people for thinking MTV and radio is all there is. It's not their fault really. We just live in a country that promotes other stuff.
