Would you call Opeth a mainstream band?

Maybe he didn't know much about making music and therefore there weren't any catchy choruses? Now that he can, he's a "sell out"?

I wouldn't say that, his first "catchy" tune was "My name is" which was on his very first LP... but if you listen to other songs, I believe he's a pretty talented guy and has a way with words, not that he's a musical hero of mine or anything..

I don't think "mainstream" is a bad word. It simply implies that a band is popular. People aren't often able to distinguish between "mainstream" and "selling out" and that's why they think mainstream is a bad word. Opeth has never sold out, and that's what counts!

Firstly can we get off the topic of Eminem.

My defenition of ''selling out'' is to lower your standards to increase profits. This i do not think Opeth have done, they have done something different but they have not lowered there standards by doing so & besides Damnation is only a one of experimental type thing so i doubt they will ever go mainstream, popular in the metal society but not mainstream.

I wouldn't call them mainstream, but they're starting to get better known, and consequently, a more controlled. See the issue with Music For Nations not letting Mike onto the next Bloodbath album unless they were paid a substantial royalty.

Even with that said however, I don't think Opeth are having their artistic vision being limited by their success at all. Just see the case with the double release of Deliverance and Damnation as evidence of that.

Seems more like Mike didn't really want to do another Bloodbath cd, aside from the royalty issue. Is Ayreon on MFN? Nobody's mentioned royalty issues about that collaboration...I think it's definetly more Mike didn't want to do another Bloodbath cd.

It was quite clear from interviews and such that Mike wasn't interested in Bloodbath too much, at least on the scale that Swanö is.
Ayreon is on InsideOut.

As long as you're playing music you yourself want to listen to I don't think you're compromising your artistic integrity for te sake of cash. Opeth probably do in fact hope to gain listeners with Damnation and may have even taken a step purposefuly to gain more fans. But at the same time, they are playing music they themselves love so they still aren't being sellouts.

Metallica on the other hand...you can just tell they're money hungr, fred durst wannabees now)atleast lars).

You knwo what's funny? Metallica kicked up a huge stink & helped napster be shut down & recently my friend read an interview about how lars owns an ipod & thinks there great peices of technology! HYPOFUCKINGCRYTS!

Opeth aren't mainstream. barely anyone knows who they are except metal heads. If you ask a brittany spears fan who opeth is, she'll have no idea. If you ask an Opeth fan who brittany spears is, almost everyone of them will know. As long as Opeth growl, they arent going to be mainstream. Maybe harvest could pass on a classic rock radio station, and actually, that would be amazing to hear it on one (i know its not classic rock, but it fits that genre). Windowpane has a "music video" that aired at like 3:00 am on Headbangers ball in america, and if thats mainstream, i guess my definition of mainstream is mixed up.
