Would you call Opeth a mainstream band?

I don't think Opeth are mainstream, but they're getting closer and closer. Lamentations must be selling well, I've seen it in Chart sections in music stores.
They could become really big someday, if the mainstream changes to accept them. I don't believe they will ever do anyting with record sales in mind. They've said themselves that they thought Damnation would LOSE them fans, not gain them many, I think it was a bit of a surprise for them.

I'm not so sure the growls would keep them from being mainstream. I would call Hatebreed mainstream (although their vocals are more "screamo" than death)...you could also include Slipknot, Thrice, The Used in that unclean vocals/popular band category.

The first step to becoming mainstream is going on MTV. Also, when anyone will listen to it, despite their 'musical affiliation.' Such as, when System of a Down went mainstream, i heard everyone listening to Chop Suey, the music video played constantly, i'd even hear Ricers thumping to it in their shitty- all bass systems in their cars. I dont think that'll ever happen to Opeth.

...but they have been played on 89.5 wsou. its an underground college station, but its still the radio. but i've only heard deliverance and a fair judgement.

Do their songs appear on the radio?
No.

See, this is the kind of stuff I don't want to hear. I could start an online radio station right now and play Opeth. I could probably get an hour long spot on the commercial-free university station here and play Opeth. I understand that people use the term "radio-band" to communicate that a band is very compatible with the masses, but that doesn't mean they're selling out. Tool is huge in the mainstream, and they have never sold out. A band that lowers their standards or purposefully writes songs that they know people will like for the sake of money is selling out, and bands like that will get on the radio, but that does not mean that all bands on the radio are selling out.

Opeth is the next Nickelback.

How can you tell when that happens? Can you give me examples?

It isn't black and white...it's something you 'feel', you don't 'know' it. Since everyone has a different definition and hears 'selling out' differently in whatever they listen to, this debate has the potential to simply go on forever.

opeth is mainstream in the sense that they are well known. but they are by no means people pleasers like 90% of mainstream is (i say 90 because there are always bands like tool in the mainstream). I think bands like Dimmu, Opeth, In Flames, and Soilwork are mainstream. Opeth and Dimmu really haven't sold out yet. They have changed a lot, but In Flames and Soilwork, you just gotta look at the new shit. BTW, anyone else think new In Flames sounds a lot like Korn?

I don't find that the guitars sound like Korn, but Anders's voice is getting there. The guitars don't sound like Korn, but they sound like nu-metal and yes i do think In Flames has sold out. It's sad actually...

The new album sounds nothing like korn. If Korn somehow got a little thing called "talent". Then I could see a comparison. The album fuckign rules by the way. As far as opeth goes. Nobody knows who the fuck opeth are! Get yer heads art yer arses (pirate voice) When I went to purchase tickets for their shows the guy looked at me with a blank expression on his face and said "Is that a band?". I've never seen anyone wear an opeth shirt in public other than me and my metal friend. I see people wearing shit like deicide every day though. The metal bands I see being represented attire wise on the streets are. Deicide, cannible corpse, slipknot, mudvayne, emperor. I see it all the time. I don;t know what city you guys live in to consider opeth mainstream. I can;t really gauge their popularity by mtv. I don;t watch that shitty shit shit. Do they even play videos anymore? Ask a person on the street what opeth is. And they'll say "is that a new form of illegal substance?"

I agree with whoever said it's something you just feel. If a band starts out writing original music and stops doing so, you know they're lowering their standards so they can make more, or they just lost the inspiration they once had. Even Mikael said in an old post that a lot of nu-metal guitarists are better than him, but is that evident? Not really, they just write music that doesn't require all of them. And that's not bad, but if you're capable of more, do more.
