I don't think Symphonic BM and Melodic BM are the same, but I'm having a hard time thinking of an explanation. I just don't think they sound the same.

They're just not the same thing. I guess you could say there's a lot of crossover, but it's not necessary. Dissection and Sacramentum are melodic but not symphonic, while Emperor has some pretty sturdy chunks of symphonic dissonance.

Both are very much on par in terms of popularity on this forum if recent polls are any indication. Also, you need to take into account the separate Brutal/Slam Death Metal thread which is also quite active.

I think BM has more variety and tends to mix better with other genres. That, and the definition for BM is a little broader.

I was just listening to some Bal-Sagoth and it's pretty hard not to call them symphonic. However, a large amount of melodic bands sound just like symphonic bands, and vice versa. The distinction between the two styles sometimes gets muddled.

That works too, I guess. They're just a hard band to categorize, each album can be labeled something else.

Despite the recent trend of blackgaze and post-rock influenced bands, the term post-bm shouldn't be applied to that style really. It was for years used to describe bands like Arcturus, Solefald, Manes, etc.

Sure that works, even though they precede the term. I do think they're more black metal than post metal. Ashes is the only album that might have more post metal elements.

Even that doesn't work fully, because The Mantle and Ashes only have a handful of metal songs between them.

I can see what you're saying with The Mantle, but Ashes is all metal except for Parts 1 and 3 of Bloodbirds.
