Oh, I heard that one after I finished A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Really liked it too.

Varg is a moron, but seems harmless nowadays. His rants are kind of endearing in a semi-racist deranged prepper way...
I really like most of his stuff besides the first album (too raw) up until Umskiptar. After that it goes off on a tangent I don't much enjoy.

This seems weird to me. Production wise, the first 2 are less raw and abrasive than both Hvis... and Filosofem. If you're talking musically, then they're still full of some of Varg's most melodic passages. When was the last time you listened to them?

The first album isn't mixed as well as the others - the instruments all feel separated off from one another, and the drums are slightly too loud. I remember reading an interview wit Varg in which he claimed that Filosfem was intentionally recorded with the shittiest equipment he could obtain, and yet the production on that sounds absolutely perfect to me. Everything gels.
Not listening to a black metal album because of poor production is pretty dumb though.

Deformed, I may start off with Filosofem and move on to Hvis. Mostly because Filosofem is the one I have better memory of.

It's been maybe 2-3 years. And yeah, definitely raw as far as songwriting goes. Less developed maybe being a better word? All his early stuff is sonically raw compared to the post-prison stuff.

Nothing he's released post prison has been on the same level as his earlier material, though. Fallen was good, but the rest was pretty forgettable.

My problem with Belus was that I don't think the riffs leant themselves to repetition in the same way the riffs on Hvis or Filosofem did. Instead of hypnotic it just felt like the music wasn't really going anywhere. It's still an alright album though by general bm standards, and I'll commend Varg for trying something a little different with the softer production.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Belus is a great album, or anywhere near his best stuff. I agree with pretty much everything you said. It's just I think the song "Glemselens Elv" isn't too far behind his best works.

I don't remember it too clearly - I'll give it a spin after I've finished reassuring myself that South of Heaven doesn't suck.
True, Glemselens Elv is one of his best songs. But Belus wasn't as consistent as Fallen. Fallen hits comparable heights, and more often.
I would rank the Burzum discography (not counting the re-recording album because it was shit) as follows:

^ It's a great ranking but Det Som Engang Var should swap places with Burzum/Aske. The rest is right.
