do you show off being metal?

I have a few band shirts (burzum, asphyx, possessed, candlemass) that I wear fairly regularly but they are far from my only wardrobe. Over the past couple of years I have kinda moved away from the whole metal 'look', though I still do have long hair, but then again long hair isn't inherently metal either.

I listen to it all the time, but rarely do I feel like broadcasting my music taste to others unless I already know them well enough and I can actually talk to them about music I like.

I don't show off being metal. I don't own any metal band t-shirts. I don't really see the point in making fashion statements, or any kind of ostentatious proclamation. I wear basketball shorts, but I never play basketball; I wear them because they're comfortable. My girlfriend actually gets upset when I go out with friends and dress in basketball shorts and a loose-fitting, ragged t-shirt. She always says "You're going out looking like that?" And my friends always say to her "You should be happy that he's not trying to impress anyone." And I'm not. Fashion style and appearance inevitably lead to false assumptions and labeling. People should be judged on personality.

Of course, I realize this is somewhat idealistic and impractical. Even I wouldn't wear basketball shorts to a job interview  I just don't approve of the implications that go along with defining oneself by appearance.

Why take it all so seriously? False assumptions and labeling are inevitable whether you dress in a certain style or not. People are ultimately judged on personality anyway. I see fashion as a bit of fun and another form of personal expression. Dressing to impress others doesn't enter the equation at all. If people are dressing purely to impress others then I'm sure they are probably insecure about their appearance and being socially accepted, but at the other end of the scale if you're going out of your way to dress like a blank canvas it also says something about your insecurities as far as being judged by others goes.

I don't dress like a metalhead, although I did for years when I was younger. I still wear band shirts sometimes. I generally buy them at gigs as a memento, and have had many conversations with people about music because of whatever band shirt I was wearing at the time which is cool.

All I ever wear are metal shirts and black bdu pants, except for on some special occasions or job interviews and the like. I think I own maybe two or three unmetal shirts, whereas I have like 20 or so metal shirts. I don't regard it as showing off or anything; it would only be showing off if I thought there was something special about me because I like metal. It's just a subculture I identify with, and I really don't feel comfortable wearing anything else. People from high school who see me now would probably think I just stepped right out of 2002 because I've basically looked the same since I was 17. They'd probably think I never grew up and then I'd just laugh at how fat they got and all their idiotic children that they have to feed.

Also, I listen to my jams loud because that's how metal is supposed to be listened to.

people love it here when i wear my Destroyer666-Unchain The Wolves shirt with a priest on the back hanging from a tree by a rope,i show off to all the Xtians

So wearing a shirt to support something is a 'conceptual equivalent of a childish superhero action figure'?
Its not a fucking cause that you show your 'support' for. You're not helping flood victims wearing black t's you idiot. You just gain a subconcious satisfaction from being different and that's all what it is about.

You're full of shit, and a faggot.
Please. Gain a fucking brain that goes well with your advanced age.

Or maybe you gain a CONSCIOUS satisfaction by wearing what you enjoy wearing. Get over yourself.

oh so its about the design?

the satisfaction's from the fact that you like showing off an accomplishment of having achieved that feeble and stupid goal. people wearing shades in public after dusk is no different.

Wearing what one likes to wear is a feeble and stupid goal? Do you actively wear what you dislike to wear? You're being a very stupid fucking person right now. Make sense in your next post or I'll be disappointed.

It's the same thing as wearing a team shirt of whatever team you support, it's to show that you're proud in supporting them. I wear Entombed shirts to show that i support them, people may ask me about what my shirt means and i'll tell them that it's an awesome band that they should check out. Lastly a lot of metal shirts just simply look very good.

Aw and that would displease the gods eh?

I'm questioning the NEED to wear a metal shirt at all. What exactly do you like about it? The music? lol. Seriously... Mathiäs likes to support the band right? Would people walking around reading the band's name make them want to just... idk.. check out a record and perhaps help the poor band members' dying mothers? It's fucking pointless.

That feeble and stupid goal is showing off a rather pointless personal accomplishment of having conquered a musical genre. I don't see a point in showing anything off at all to be honest.. its something a neglected kid would do after he's just gotten a good grade. It's not even an accomplishment of any kind.. its rather childish and immature to be having an open public display of your pride in being a metalhead.

The only good rational explanation would be: "I wear it because I like the album's artwork". (which would be cheaper to get printed yourself than buy a branded one). There are MUCH better designs available elsewhere, and I"m talking about metal designs. But nobody would go for that since they're not accompanied by a killer band's logo.
