dream theater

They are a mediocre band...Images & Words is a very good album and that is it, Train of Thought also has one or two great tracks, overall, their lyrics are horribly cheesy most of the time, Petrucci's overlong bullshit solos and nu-metal-meets-Metallica Riffs are stupid, even though he can write a cool riff here and there and is a very skilled player...LaBrie sounds ok for the type of music they play, but sometimes he really irritates me with all the faux-emotional crap and gayness.

This DT bashing is pathetic I think !

ANd people who bashes DT because of the wankfest ( it is not on every song and 100% of the time get your facts straight ) thing should stop saying that they listen sometimes to late 60's early 70's jazz rock ( M Davis, Mahavishnu, do you fucks know about T Willimas Lifetime, Di Meola even Zappa) because the wank parts are completely derived from that time and I wonder what makes tha wank parts cool & okay in 70's jazz rock ans shit sandwich in DT plus the DT instrumental are really well written and sometimes quite emotional which is fairly rare in 70's Jazz rock.

You don't like the DT/Journey Steve Perry type vocals and that's okay.

And who do you think you are : extreme/prog/folk "I know better about everything regarding muisc than 99% of the population" geeks ??

Even if you don't like them, you should at least respect a band like DT who puts the music first and nothing else instead of childish insults.

Grow the fuck up !

I really don't understand this "DT is lame" bandwagon but DT is one of my favourite bands so.

^is it like your mission to defend every shitty band brought up here?

I'm not really a fan either, but I think they have some nice moments (some songs on Images And Words and Scenes From A Memory) and are very talented musicians. The wanking is a bit irritating and I'm also not a fan of Labrie's voice sound in general and the way he overacts it and doesn't sound sincere. I partly agree with Halo and D_T_F_M. It's ok to express your opinion about a band but these "horrible", "they blow", "shit" often followed by "close thread" etc... comments are just a bit gay. Sure they're not all that great, and all people have different musical tastes, but people just overreact with going all negative, and then not even giving any reasons for hating them. If you've heard everything by Dream Theater and you can't point out one or a few songs or moments that you think are not "horrible", then you're just lying to yourself. And yes it has become a trend to hate Dream Theater, and while certainly not all people will be bashing them because of that, I'm pretty sure 1 or 2 people here are just being trendfollowers. And how is posting these short shit-posts without giving any reasons useful at all (not that that is a necessity at all on this forum :erk: )?

man, get over yourself. DT should be so lucky as to lick the shoes of Mahavishnu or Zappa. its not a bandwagon, its the facts. im glad to see people grow tired of wankfest music and desire more emotion and feel.

DT doesn't necessarily suck they just don't put as much emotion into their music, however I would love to see more prog metal bands with keyboards. Maybe something like a progressive version of dimmu borgir with pink floyd mixed in.

I really wish someone would put James LaBrie in a Port-A-John, and fire a Rocket propelled grenade launcher at him. His vocal style makes my teeth hurt. I do like Portnoy's drumming. Pertrucci (I think) plays fast to just play fast, so others will think he is an amazing guitarist. I don't feel a lot of passion or emotion coming through in their music. Off-topic, I've been listening to Moonsorrow's Veriskeet for a couple of weeks, and am thouroughly convinced their singer needs to be impaled by a Viking sword( he sounds like maybe he has) the music, I like, but that fuckin' schreeching singer has got to go.

I like them a good bit. I actually think Six Degress of Inner Turbulence is a very interesting album. Their new one, Octavarium, is pretty much crap though. It's expected that you're going to get a lot of that over-the-top instrumentation in a DT album, and I for one do enjoy it. I just have to put myself into a different mindset than when I'm listening to something highly emotional. I don't agree that DT is devoid of emotion, anyway. Voices, Space Dye Vest, The Silent Man, Disappear, Home, and various other parts of their songs are interspersed with moments that have emotion. No, they're not brimming over with it, as some bands can accomplish, but I'd say it's enough. I don't need to be fucking crying when I listen to music to enjoy it.

I think plenty of Dream Theater songs have emotion - Vacant, About to Crash, Space Dye Vest are pretty damn emotional if you ask me. I think it's a lot easier to listen to a few of the more grooving songs and their solos and decide they're incapable of feel because 6:00 and The Glass Prison aren't the band pouring out its collective soul. That said, I can see where people may even think the songs I mentioned have no feel - and I think you're just missing out.

its funny when someone tries to defend that point with the same 5-10 songs out of a band with 8 studio albums and extensive b-sides and covers, yet still the same few tracks get mentioned. point is, ... well i don't even have to explain it.

Yeah, Dream Theater have more than a few good ballads. Awake, I&W, SFAM, and 6 Degrees are all pretty good. There is quite a bit of emotion on these records. They probably should hang it up and pursue other projects these days as they don't have much left, but they have accomplished enough that they shouldn't be called a shit band even if they have a few clunkers in the catalogue. Many legendary bands have recorded shit albums.

And if you just prefer not to listen to music with that type of singing and a lot of solos, then okay. I basically never listen to power metal, but I don't feel the need to shit on bands that I don't care for, such as Dragonforce. (Which, if you're going to slag on a band for being wanky, it might as well be them.) People on both sides of the debate tend to overreact a ton, similarly to debates regarding Opeth on other forums.

Do you want me to go through every track of their discography and say which are jam songs and which are emotional songs and which are ballads and which are experimentation of sorts and which are just plain failures? I was naming just a few off the top of my head, and at the very least, you've just conceded that the "COMPLETELY EMOTIONELSS FTW" label has to be amended.

that would be unnecessary since i have heard their entire discography. if you'd actually read my replies, you'd note that i said they were decent back in the day, and that they have a few well-written songs. however, the ruling majority of their work is wanktasia.
