More than half aren't
The only track that even has a case for being black metal is I Am The Wooden Doors
I love the album and it is better than 99% of any metal for me, but doesn't have a place here (honestly no Agalloch does outside of Faustian Echoes and the last two albums - which are trash anyways)
You Were but a Ghost in My Arms is clearly black metal and "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion " and "...and the Great Cold Death of the Earth" both have black metal elements.
You're so wrong on Marrow of the Spirit. A total masterpiece from start to finish. And "packing it in"? Give me a fucking break. There's so much detail and originality on that album. Serpent and the Sphere is definitely a big step down, but is still solid.
There is absolutely no reason to exclude EPs/demos. Some bands best releases are demo work - Emperor's Wrath of the Tyrant for example.
What a terrible opinion. Wrath of the Tryant isn't even worth listening to let alone superior to a masterpiece like Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.
I'd just throw in all Agalloch as black metal. Why the fuck not.
The Mantle is one of the greatest albums of the past 20 years but only about 1/3 of the LP consists of black metal. It would be at or near the top of the list because of quality, but does it really make sense to call it one of the greatest black metal albums of all time when it's not really black metal?
