I bought a new car (the "I wanna be like Gugs" thread)...

I really like it ... its just lacking a bit of character :loco: ... but for daily driving its awesome, has great dynamics and loves to be pushed. But even with its increased size over the MINI, I have less space in the drivers seat which is another thing that bothers me ... and the fact that I can't get over 18mpg's in the city with it ... where I drive the most.
I always owned real odball cars ... this is my first "common" machine.

Want to buy a 2000 Dodge Ram?

It was bequeathed to my girlfriend when her dad died!

OK. So after test driving both cars (the Volkswagen GLI and the Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5) three times each, and after being nearly certain I'd wind up in the Altima, I've decided on the GLI (in white, pictured below). Aside from the monthly payment being $100 cheaper per month and being a bit better on gas, it's just a lot more fun to drive. The difference in regard to responsiveness (with respect to steering and acceleration) is night and day. The GLI is a pure performance machine, whereas the Altima bridges luxury and performance. I just wish the GLI had a better stereo. Even though it's a 10 speaker, 6-CD in-dash, in just lacks something. There's a premium audio package that adds an amp. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to locate one that's shipped from the factory with this option. I'm going to put the order in tomorrow and pick the car up the day after we get back from Mexico... which should alleviate the usual depression I feel when returning from the Caribbean.

Good move Greg ...the DSG tranny alone is worth the price of admission. Did you try it in manual mode?

If my numbers work out this week, I will be trading in the Mazda for a Cooper Clubman.

Already checked with insurance and my premium would drop 600/year ... I would get another 10mpg (i can't get the damn Mazda3 to give me better than 18-19mpgs combined) ... which is damn inexcusable on a 4 cyclinder car.

dude ... just drove Leons GLI today ... that car is just so well put together, solid body, everything feels tight ... great choice.

Why does your Mazda get such poor mileage? That's in the same range as my not-yet-purchased Hemi Orange 425 hp Dodge Challenger.
BTW, my friend has a Jetta Diesel with some 150,000 miles on it and it still feels very solid. The only thing is she says the maintenance and repairs are very expensive.

LOL @ the Challenger ... make sure you pick up the $500 knife on the way to the dealer first.

i don't know what's up with the Mazda mileage ... i know its not my car, as other on the Mazda forums are getting similar results in city environments ...
on the highway its better at around 27-29 ... but highway driving around these parts is like city driving ...traffic all the time and not much of a chance to open her up.

since i bought it i never got more than 250 miles to a 13.5 gallon tank.

my 1976 boat Buick Regal used to get those kind of numbers

Played with a bit, but not seriously.

Awesome. I hope it works out for you.

Thanks. It is an impressive car to drive. It just feels like you have complete control.

I can't imagine the Altima being a "drivers" car ... it might have a bit of brute power, but I can tell without even driving it that its steering and general feel probably feels disconnected from the driver and the road.

Comparatively speaking, the Altima feels completely disconnected, especially when it comes to the steering.

next up in 36 months ... Greg buys a bimmer :loco:
LOL. Actually, if I fall in love with the VW (e.g. German engineering) and I wanted to step up a bit, I think I might go for a blown out Passat. They're actually really nice. However, even $35K is a price range that the practical side of my brain wants no part of. We really want to retire in our mid 50s. So, expensive cars are just a bad idea. That said, it's just so tempting to go big, when the goal seems so far away. And the fact that so many of my friends piss their money away and encourage similar behavior, doesn't help.

The Passat is nice ... but you lose some of the driving feel ... it starts to be more of a cruiser.

I am telling you ... Bimmer's are the best balance between driving dynamics and comfort/luxury all the way across their product line.

I don't doubt that. It's just not a luxury I'm willing to pony up for. What about you? BMW in your future?

By the way... you're going on Friday... right? Assuming you are, what time are you arriving?

ahh Maiden ... what time are you guys gathering and where are you meeting?
i guess starting the usual roundrobin email is in order.
