i love how people get insulted cause you dont like their favorite band and try to tell you that you just dont understand music and that must be why you dont get it. im sure devin townsend is a talented and creative guy, and we all know hes a pretty good producer, but he is undeniably overrated. kids hang off his nuts for dear life all over the place.
ps i actually like opeth to a certain extent, but i would love to see an entire thread devoted to chopstick making fun of them and then making fun of everyone who gets offended by it.

At the end of the day its pretty much pointless arguing about whether or not a band is good over the internet (and face to face to really). It all comes down to personal taste, peoples opinions on bands are just that, opinions. No amount of "that band is the ghey" or "they rock y'all!" is gonna convince the other person that your right, as you'd have to somehow change their taste in music to acheive that. Perhaps suggesting similar, but suprior bands would be a more constructive technique in this kind of situation eh? Otherwise your just blowing hot air for the sake of it. Either that or you can all just ignore me and continue arguing pointlessly for ever and ever about the same old things...

I guess it's just an example of how sometimes the parts can be greater then their sum. I don't think much an argument could be made to defend their songwriting skills. I write music when I have time. Not just recording(I do that too) but actual notation. I have a decent understanding of music theory, and I know what it takes to write a well constructed piece. It's not easy. Devin Townsend is a great producer(as has now been stated) and certainly knows how to be brutal. BUT, that doesn't mean he writes good hooks, and it certainly doesn't mean he writes cohesive, thought out songs. I recently downloaded most of his cds to see what the fuss about and was pretty dissapointed. Terria and Ocean machine seem to be OK, but not exactly what I was expecting when people say "he's in a league of his own."

Back on topic. I think the new In Flames album is ok, its got some nice riffs and catchy chorus'. But just as with Clayman and R2R, theres to much repition and all the songs follow the same basic structure (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-GOD I'M BORED!). It's not a patch on anything pre-colony.
I mean, why would In Flames go back to that sound? There making money now and have more fans than ever, so they have no reason to do so. Much as it pains to me to admit

I too think that the NU in flames album sucks big time and its pure garbage and some of Opeth fans are fuckin emo wankers but not all Opeth fans are like that.
oh, I'm not sure but Dan Swano Produced all 4 first Opeth albums...
