Metal Chicks

Even if they got rid of him to get a better vocalist, why not find a male vocalist who could handle the job? Do you think Mike would have hired Angela is she were fat and very very ugly? No.

Jo from Bolt Thrower, Lori from Nuclear Assault, Vhex from Feldgrau, and the chick who does interludes for Averse Sefira.

The four worthwhile female contributions to metal.

Octavia Sperati. All female metal along the lines of Lacuna Coil (so it's not really metal...)

Holy Moses is the best example of kick ass metal chicks, as is Doro/Warlock.

Chicks have a place in metal. No different than guys. I don't see how a girl playing an instrument gets "as long as she knows how to play", but when a guy picks up a guitar, regardless of ability it's ok.

Wow, looks as though metal is not only homoerotic, but also rather sexist.

I know not everyone here is sexist, but to the guys that are, wow... grow the fuck up.

Who the fuck wants to look at a fat person anyways especially touring, recording. Her looks had something to do with it maybe but I doubt it was purely based on her being a female.

She also does not look nearly as good as Christina Scabbia,Anekke,Sharon den Adel,Liv Kristine so it can't be purely on her looks. From what I remember Angela was growling in bands years before. It probably helped album sales but who cares. Who would not want to sell a lot of albums.

If they wanted to hire a female purely on looks or sell out they could have gotten a really hot clean female vocalist or something.

Fear of God (my all time favorite female-fronted metal band)
Mine, too, (actually mostly their album "Within The Veil", while I wasn´t that impressed with "Toxic Voodoo") - until I bought Atrox´ "Terrestrials" 3 years ago. Well, their vocalist Monika Edvardsen, who left the band after their latest album "Orgasm", sounds totally different from Dawn Crosby (RIP) - whom she also likes very much -, but I like her now at least as much as Dawn.
So what do you all think of women in metal? Should there be more women in metal music?
I wouldn´t mind, as long as they don´t sound all the same. Actually, most metal bands I listen to nowadays are female-fronted. And I generally like female vocalists better than male vocalists. Even my very first metal album way back in 1984 - "Dancin` On The Edge" by Lita Ford (BTW, she also played guitar) - was female-fronted.

most females in metal bands are vocalists of the operatic variety
Don´t know, if this is really true. If you think of bands from the eighties/early nineties - Warlock, Rock Goddess, Holy Moses, Chastain, Znowhite, Meanstreak, Phantom Blue, Original Sin, Détente/Fear Of God, Sacrilege, Zed Yago - none of them featured operatic vocals. And today, you still find a lot of females in metal bands who are not "of the operatic variety" like e.g. Agnete M. Kirkevaag (Madder Mortem), Monika Edvardsen (Ex-Atrox), Carmen Espenaes (Midnattsol), Sandra Schleret (Soulslide, Ex-Dreams Of Sanity), Nienke de Jong (Autumn), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering - OK, they aren´t metal anymore) and many others.

BTW, who are some good female metal guitarists/bassists/drummers? I can't think of any.
The original members of Phantom Blue, especially the guitarists Michelle Meldrum (she has now her own band called Meldrum) and Nicole Couch, were very good IMO. I don´t know if she counts as metal, but I think bassist Melissa auf der Maur isn´t bad either.

By the way, as regards females in metal, you should also have a look at this encyclopedia at www.metalmaidens.com .

This thread has never been done before.

Sarcasm, or are you actually paying a compliment? (!)

re: Burkhard - I had no idea that Fear of God got a replacement for Dawn. To me, that seems like blasphemy, but if you say she's as good as Ms. Crosby, I'll check it out. Also, thank you for all your helpful info.

And, yes Cynical, I should have remembered Jo. What's the matter with my head?o_O

There´s obviously a misunderstanding. I didn´t say that Fear Of God got a replacement for Dawn (actually, they don´t exist anymore - for further information check www.fear-of-god.com ). Atrox are a band from Norway and Monika Edvardsen was their singer - they have absolutely nothing to do with Fear of God resp. Dawn Crosby. I just meant to say that I like Monika Edvardsen (or her work with Atrox) even a bit more than Dawn Crosby. However, her vocals are, as I already said, totally different. I´d say, "Terrestrials" is something like a metal pendant to Kate Bush´s album "The Dreaming" - very original music (to avoid the word "progressive"), original lyrics and probably even more original vocals, thus definitely not everyone´s taste.

This is a great example why it's ok to have women in metal.

It would be if Within Temptation didn't suck. I saw a recent video by them on MTV and just... wow... what the hell happened there?

I think my favourite female fronted metal band would have to be Madder Mortem since they are certainly a band that has an original sound and a great vocalist who sounds like she actually has some balls rather than the "I am a gothy princess!" thing that a lot of frontwomen in other metal bands seem to have. Can't wait for their new album.

I suggest checking out their first album 'enter' which is gothic doom metal. The album has a lot of growling vocals too. good stuff.
