nah I think people just live in the closet as they are afraid of persecution

they are plenty of homos in Muslim countries but they never identify themselves in fear of almost certain punishment

Why is it then that in certain parts of the world, there is absolutely no trace of homosexuality, and people are basically ignorant of the very existance of this concept. Does the ignorance actually eventually makes them straight or do they just never come out of their closets?

It's because some cultures place such a strong emphasis on masculinity that admitting to homosexuality is unthinkable. Like social suicide. For example, in latino culture, if a man were to admit to being a homosexual, he would cease to be a man in the eys of the community. To a lesser degree, it's the same with blacks, which is why most of the gay guys you'll meet here in the states are white.

Perhaps it is possible to convert from being a homosexual to being a heterosexual just by acting the other way for a long duration of time? Like a mental exercise. The mind will adapt to this new change eventually. And maybe that's really what certain people in those other cultures really do.. they convert themselves.

it's not that simple, people are attracted to what they are attracted. Most people who say that do so to please others, and it is far from the truth

just my $.02 anyways, though I have heard of men who were bisexual whose sexual drive for men eventually faded.

who really knows anyways?? sexuality is such a complex thing, one that we don't know much about

Then that would mean, *gulp* they would choose not to be gay! omg!

But that is impossible, might as well just give up now.

Aarohi, what is your proof that there are, in fact, cultures that do not have homosexuals within? Do these cultures test people to verify that they are all heterosexuals? It's pretty much impossible to make a legitimate claim to there being no homosexuality whatsoever in a given culture.

I saw a thing on tv about this. People were so terrified about being gay they never acted on it or told anyone and acted as if they were straight. They were all extremely depressed and many had attempted suicide.Going against you basic nature just doesn't work.

lots and LOTS of gays are depressed/hate themselves for many many years until they finally learn to accept it

I can imagine being a gay 15 16 year old kid has to be absolutely devastating

Take India, for example. I've read enough literature to know certainly about the fact that there is not one single instance of homosexuality quoted in either the mythological texts, classical writings or artforms. Homosexuality is a topic that is not talked about or even known about for that matter (leaving aside the development of the past 5 years). I'm basically quoting this from personal experience rather than a document or a source of similar sort. I'm actually learning about homosexuality than having a standpoint of my own here. It's still a very foreign concept to me.

I think homosexuality changes colours when in face with different cultures too. There could be a certain individual who'd have 'those genes' but perhaps he himself can't ever contemplate what the difference is, because the act of loving someone who is your own gender is not anywhere on the horizon. It doesn't exist for them because he doesn't know "what those signals mean". Those genes can't just mean loving your own gender's folk. Perhaps they change shape/colour when in face with different circumstances/cultures? (evolution?)

That does not mean that there are no homosexuals in India. What it means is that homosexuality is unacceptable in Indian culture and, therefore, no one will admit it. The fact that it is never acknowledged there only means that it's ignored or swept under the rug.

Having said that, I'm not trying to be critical of Indian culture.

you don't have to practice it to be a homosexual

a gay men who is married (and in the closet who has never had sex with a men) is still gay at heart

it's who are you are truly attracted to, not who you fuck, that determines your sexuality
