they did get beat pretty well (though I'm sure you only saw the final score and not 1 second of the game), but they didn't lose their top spot in the Atlantic.

They're tied, with 1 game in hand. Technically, they're still in 3rd place in the East (1st in the Atlantic), the Flyers are in 5th in the East (2nd in the Atlantic).

It's not weird at all. If you score on the Power Play, and prevent other teams from scoring on the Power Play, you win hockey games.
