hey guys, just curious...
what's your protools hd rig setup?
what i/o and pre's do you have, and how are you routing everything?

The 192s are configurable with different cards in the back. There's a digital card that supports ADAT that you can have two of for 16 channels or an analog card with 8 line ins I believe, so you would just patch out of the line outs on your preamp and use the 192s converters. I'm no expert but from memory I believe that's correct.
The CraneSong Spider pre has an ADAT out, so it's handling pres + conversion in one box. Andy uses RME ADI-8's for conversion into his 192's, IIRC.
really?
so that bypasses the a/d in the 192
but the 192 is still necessary...
Yes just like your 800R bypasses the a/d in your Fireface but you still need the Fireface. The 192 is the interface between your preamps and your computer, it's required whether you use it's A/D or not.
Well, it's not really required these days depending on what A/D converter you use. Lynx, Apogee, etc have cards you can install in their products that integrate directly with the HD core cards - no 192 needed. The cards from these other companies "trick" HD into actually thinking a 192 is hooked up.
Well yeah but either way Joey needs SOMETHING between his preamps and core cards, whether it's a 192, 96 i/o, Lynx Aurora with PT card or an Apogee unit.

) plugged into the legacy port of the 192.... could be wrong though.Without a doubt I would go a Lynx Aurora with the PT expansion card, directly hooked up to the Core Card. No love for Digidesign interfaces here. The 192 is basically just the middle man. If you cut it out you'll be better off for it down the track.
the 192 are really good.
I've A/B'd them to the apogee and they really came close....the AD16-x was just a tiny bit better, that's why I got it.
do you think i'll be downgrading in audio quality from my rme ff800 to the 192?
what if i just use the 192 as the required link between my daw and my pre's, but the a/d is happening on a higher quality converter?
