The awesome anime thread.

The same guy who made Dead Leaves was also the director and animation director of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. So if you've ever liked giant robot stuff like Gunbuster and want more of that crazy animation style, there's your next stop.

Anime fandom is fucking unbearable. Yeah, most things that end up overhyped are trash, like Code Geass or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I've been having some pretty lengthy discussions about this sort of thing with a couple of people on MAL, going into the subject of superflat (an artistic movement in Japan that combines -- i.e. "flattens" -- the low-brow and high-brow of anime in an effort to view postwar Japan through the eyes of "otaku culture") and subversive postmodernism in anime vs. the more popular loli moe pedo "tsundere" whatever bullshit that dominates the medium today, and has mostly over the course of the last decade.

But yeah, suffice to say most of the time people go nuts over the dumbest shit.

TTGL was just fun, and I guess I was lucky enough to see it as it was airing and avoided most of the hype fallout. I've liked a lot of things Gainax have done (Evangelion, FLCL, etc.) and it had been a while since they did something as thrilling as Gunbuster. (Diebuster was way too candy-sweet for me, even if its ending was awesome.)

People think it's cool.

Most of the brilliant animes go unnoticed such as La Maison en Petit Cubes, Diary of Tortov Roddle, Kemonozume, Eve no Jikan, Pale Cocoon (Brilliant) and maybe even some of the Sweat Punches.
And Anticitizen is right, all of the so called anime fans go crazy for boobs and panties. But in the end those trashy animes will be forgotten while landmarks by Hayao Miyazaki will always be remembered.

Well, Haruhi is "considered cool" too. All that is is yet another schoolgirl harem with a hapless nobody at the center of it all, written in to be the pathetic virgin audience's medium of vicarious experience. It tries to be weird to trick people into thinking it's somehow revolutionary (for example, it was originally aired out of sequence, deliberately) when it's nothing but cliché and everything bland and shitty that anime has become.

Code Geass, though... Considering I hate CLAMP (not only do I find their character design style repulsive, but they're also awful writers and guilty of making some of the worst shit out there, like Chobits), I don't really need to see anime that's full of Pizza Hut product placement, and ... well, that's about it. It's just not good. I could just watch the vastly superior Legend of the Galactic Heroes (to which Code Geass owes its only redeemable qualities) instead. That would be much better.

If you're under the impression it's cool, well, that's a pretty popular opinion. Death Note is also hugely popular, and even though it's intensely theatrical and hooks people in, it's a total clusterfuck of ludicrous plotting with no actual character depth or anything -- though this is beyond most people, and all they talk about is whether they like Light or L more, and how much they totally hate Misa.

Lots of really bad anime is considered cool. Depends on who you're asking, though.

Hail the Wizard! seems to know his stuff.

I get the feeling Anticitizen is just being all artfag over this shit.

Where's the deeper meaning to this piece of art, and bollocks of the similar such.
subversive postmodernism in anime

Case in point.

Some people just want something they can sit back and enjoy and go "Hur, they're beating the shit outta each other". I know I do.

EDIT: I will admit though, the whole fan service/loli shit is creepy as fuck, and no basis for an anime. Whatsoever.

Seriously though, I am sorry you're a mouthbreather who is offended by any thought beyond "hur hur they're beating the shit outta each other", but I was only talking about an art movement that exists, and how I find it interesting. You want to be a fucking douchetard and call me an artfag, okay then. Enjoy being a caveman.

It was nothing but pure awesome action and a little awkward sex.

Never did I say I don't appreciate a good beatdown like any guy with healthy testosterone levels (preferably when it's done with style, as Dead Leaves most definitely is), but yes, I do like to think about things critically.

So, I've finally gotten around buying the Dominion manga. Not started reading yet though but I suspect it will rule, Shirow is almost always good, especially his drawings which are legendary imo.

While I enjoy anime with depth as much as the next guy, I found Haruhi to be rather amusing and a fun no brainer to munch on candy and drink soda to.

Nothing out of Japan has ever made me laugh actually, unless you count laughing AT something. They just have really stupid and lame humor imo.

I'm going to start watching Paranoia Agent when I get home, I've heard lots of good things about it.

Anyone see Cromartie Highschool? That shit is hilarious is a totally stupid 100% ridiculous way. te dub actually works better than the sub in this case. It is more like something off of Adult Swim than anime and it knows it and makes fun of itself. Also, it features a gorilla, a robot and Freddy Mercury as high school students. I shit you not. I bought the whole show for like $15 and it was a wonderful purchase.
