The Most Universally Respected Bands (among metalheads)

Yeah, I'd call them 'popular' in the same sense that a band like say, Arch Enemy is, for example. But they do generate a lot of negative comments for being 'stupid', or 'repeditive' or whatever, and sometimes I have to agree. Fun band, but their style probably won't be a respectable one for some listeners I think.

But there's a distinction between folk-black metal and viking metal. Bathory was only viking-black metal for one album (Blood Fire Death) and even then I wouldn't call that one a folk-black metal album.

Early Bathory BM had its fair tinge of folk elements in it. That's what seperated the sound from the likes of that of Mayhem, Darthrone or Burzum at the time.

I've heard a TON of shit talk about them on the M-A boards.
You'd generally find opinions on UM and MA boards to be quite contrastive. Atleast GMD.

Most traditional black metal isn't without a small dose of the roots, because Bathory created it that way. So regular black metal by definition contains a small trace of folk. Therefore in order to be folk-black metal, the folk element has to be noticeably emphasized.

Like Blood Fire Death.. and it went more and more towards folk for Bathory as time went on. So basically, Bathory's discography defines not only the sound of these two genres at its two ends, but the bridges them together as well.

He shouldn't have died.

Bathory will be respected as a Black Metal band and it will be respected as a Viking Metal band. Not a fusion of both.

Iron Maiden and if you do not own an iron maiden cd you have no ears or taste.

If Quorthon wanted his band to be referred to as folk-black metal he would have sticked to the BFD formula. Instead he said "hey, I'm sick of black metal and this Viking theme seems to work well!" So he cast off the rest of the black metal elements and rode through the 90's toward Valhalla.

People not even into metal own iron maiden cds!

...go buy killers right now.
