Not so much with Two Lovers however

hmm, wasn't necessarily expecting agreement on that, but it wasn't a hard decision for me. i like the way ed gonzalez describes it: 'has the feel of something bygone, an ambered tone poem of unusually striking eroticism and ambiguity that derives its beauty from its hypnotic feeling for location and accumulation of seemingly off-the-cuff details that speak wondrous profundities about its main character's eccentricities and defense mechanisms'. personally i think it's one of those rare films where an archetypal screenplay is made to seem like the freshest thing in the world by the romance of the direction and the intensity of the performances. joaquin phoenix can say clichéd shit like 'i love you so much' or 'you're so beautiful' and there's this tone of fumbling desperation in his voice that gives the impression that hes desperate to say something more profound but his feelings are beyond the scope of language. performance of the year for me.

Just looked this up; it sounds interesting.

it's literally just antichrist in/around the jungle haha. its evocation of location is some of the most stunning i've ever seen, practically every shot is like something out of a fever dream, gives me the same sort of feeling as the boat in the tree in aguirre for example. but i found it harder to relate to the characters in any way which ultimately rendered it less compelling than von trier's stuff.

I want to see this now, but if Phoenix still has that "cheeks stuffed with cotton" sound to his lazy speech while delivering these lines I might end up disappointed.

holy shit , that actually changed my opinion on the movie. What a perfect way to describe it.
Also, since you had Mary and Max in your list, I watched. That was awesome as well, but I did find it oddly dark. I think that the little references and jokes are what made it brilliant, adding to the already perfect dialogue and direction.

haha yeah, it got under my skin more than any other animated movie in the last 5 or so years. i love how completely it inhabits max's perspective, and the ending's kind of perfect.

I loved Ponyo. It isn't Hayao Miyazaki's best, but it's certainly a worthy film

Id say a cross between "Kikis Delivery Service" and "My Neighbour Totoro". But yeah overall, it was good but didnt blow me away.

Tonight I watched "This is England". Im not good at making things sounds all cool and in depth like Tom, but this movie was great.

Well, Ponyo is basically a Ghibliesque take on The Little Mermaid. Cute, fun, nostalgic, really nice animation, etc. Made me feel like a kid again. Not my favorite Ghibli, but they can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes. A top five would look something like this:

1. Princess Mononoke
2. Spirited Away
3. Nausicaä
4. Porco Rosso
5. Castle in the Sky

I'd probably rank Nausicaä a slot or two higher if it weren't for the superior manga, actually.
