dream theater

Re Loomis: Sadly I only really got into Nevermore with "This godless endeavor" but man, watching Loomis live is simply unbelievable: his solo in Final Product for example (right after "Should I run or will I fall? How have I survived at all?")... jaw-droppingly awesome...Can't wait for their next tour...

Re Mike A./Steven W./Mike P.: Can't wait to hear the result of this "collaboration" either. Opeth and Porcupine Tree are among my Top 5 fave bands and I really hope we'll get to see them live as well... "Transatlantic II" would be an unoriginal yet fitting name... ;-)

Dream Theater might well be my favourite band. They have sounded less than on top for for their last 2 albums, though. Having said that, the Octavarium title track is awesome.

Petrucci is excellent and has plenty of feel and melodic interest, imo. You could be forgiven for saying he merely has speed if all you've heard is Train Of Thought. That album is way below par, and his solos on it suck, imo. Absolute shit.

Also love LaBrie's voice. Really looking forward to Score. He's said to be hitting all the notes in songs like Innocence Faded.

The problem with alot of Dream Theater is that most of the songs are dedicated to each member so they can do their bit of showing off. As people seem impressed all the time about how they deliver technically

and his solos on it suck, imo. Absolute shit.

Whenever i hear someone praising dream theater these are the sorts of things i will hear. Like how impressive it is for all the band/members to hit everything flawlessly and make it as complex as possible.
But iv never heard a dream theater album where the emotive side of it has ever over taken the technical side.

I don't think progressive metal is intended to be more "emotive" than technical.

As for LaBrie and his high notes, he was good at first, then when Once In A Livetime came out, it seems as though his voice went away (Food poisoning incident). Live Scenes From New York was a little better in that aspect, and Live At Budokan seemed to be the best. Apparently he recovered.

Loomis kicks ass. And personally I like his sound overall better than Petrucci's.
I much rather listen to Nevermore than to DT.
Although I don't like Warrel Dane's vocals any more than I like Labrie's.

To each their own. But imo listening to a band for its emotive side rather than its technical side is a MUCH richer experience.

So it's obviously a matter of definition. For you, "progressive" means "technically outstanding" (please correct me, if I'm wrong...)

Well my definition of "progressive" is more like "incorporating different styles into your music".

or progressing with what you have already achieved. Not making the style that may have worked at the time completely redundant because your too scared to change it. I appreciate bands that are daring enough to take leaps in what they have already done.

Alright, I shouldn't have used the term "progressive metal" when I was trying to explain. I should have directly referred to DT.

Speaking of listening to a band for it's emotive side, I don't think people understand how many different bands I listen to. Sometimes I don't want emotion in my music, it's depends on the feeling you want to get. Technical stuff keeps me on my feet, and emotive stuff makes me want to sit around and do nothing... and also... I find plenty of emotion in DT's older stuff, I'll admit the last 4 albums were more wankery then needed, but their first 4 were much more detailed. (I still like the last 4 albums more...)

I'm listening to Pink Floyd right now... and what am I doing? Sitting at my computer and doing nothing else. On my way home from band practice yesterday, I was listening to DT the whole way. I hope this makes sense to anyone.

Well I think it's the same for most of us; sometimes we want emotion in our music, and sometimes we don't. I fully agree with you, I also find lots of emotion in "Images and words" for example and that's mainly due to LaBrie's fantastic singing. *sigh*
And if I don't want emotion, I watch Slayer's "War at the Warfield" dvd... ;-)

A truly beautiful pic you chose as your sig...
"Morning comes too early
and nighttime falls too late
And sometimes all I want to do is wait..." ;-)
