How Did You/How Do You Discover Your Favorite Bands?

Regarding my favourite band... the cover of Pheonix Rising was just too fucking cool to ignore, so I blindly bought it. Best blind buy ever.

I use the name RadioactiveMan online whenever I can. Since I use it so often my brother pointed out the song "Radioactive" by the Firm when it came on the radio. I liked it but didn't know who it was by so I looked for it on Limewire. The two results were Radioactive by The Firm and Radioactive by Gene Simmons. I downloaded both. I liked them both but Radioactive became my favourite song. Since I loved Radioactive I started downloading more by KISS and even now the more I hear the more I love them.

I found Alizée when I saw a compilation video of her. I thought that she was gorgeous so I started finding more thing about her. I downloaded her music because soon after seeing the first video I watched her sing La Isla Bonita. Now I can't get enough of her either. I even baked a cake for her on her birthday but since I don't know her address nor a way to mail cakes I ate it myself but in her honour.

Most of the other bands that I listen to are pretty famous so I had already heard at least some of their music but the ones that I didn't know before I found using websites like last.fm and Pandora.com that show bands similar.

...Are...wait. Get out.

Pull The Plug (the UM member) got me into metal, as i never liked any music really.

I was about 16 and i only owned 4 cd's: Bomfunk MC's because I liked the video clip, Limp Bizkit and System of a down pretty much because everyone listened to it and Rob/WHite Zombie because i heard it in my cousins car and thought it was heavy as fuck. I would only listen to Rob/White zombie now out of them.

And yeah once i heard metal that was it, i actually wanted to get into music and i was introduced to DEATH and i still consider it my favourtie, though i hold other bands nearly as high too.

Wasn't till i got onto the forums and other sites did i start looking into bands myself instead of him being my ownly source of metal.

im a member of a 3000+-member invite-only forum for sharing music that incorporates a searchable index of the contents of the 50 or so FTPs that are used by members to upload albums to :I

as for how i got into some of my current favorite bands:

rilo kiley - some guy listed them as a guilty pleasure on aforementioned forum, i recognized the name from exgf so i checked them out

xiu xiu - some guy again on aforementioned forum described them as "the most disgusting, depressing music i've ever heard" (he wasnt being positive you metal idiots) so i knew i had to check them out

fugazi - heard "repeater" on fat wreck chords' internet radio station (lol) when i was like 13, thought it was the worst song i'd ever heard, so bad i had to dl it from audiogalaxy (remember audiogalaxy?) just to hear it again. then uhh it grew on me heh :I

I discovered Arcturus and Borknagar through reading a wikipedia articel about The Kovenant in which is mentioned the other bands of its former members. That's how I discovered my top favorite Borknagar.

My other top favorite, Hypocrisy, was introduced to me through cookiecutter back when he was first getting into extreme metal.

As for finding more bands, it's usually through here or finding related bands to ones I already listen to.

I have yet to discover a good band through that fucking Pandora thing
