I bought a new car (the "I wanna be like Gugs" thread)...

no way. For convenience, yay. With high-end speakers, nay. MP3s sound crappy.

Not necessarily, just encode well and it's chill yo.

Also, vinyls do sound better. Scientifically proven fact!
If you ask me though, I'd say that most of the CD-crappiness is due to shitty mastering and not the format in itself.

I pointed that out in some other thread. Of course, that was after I blew $800 on amps and speakers.

To my defenCe, I very well couldn't invest in high-end home speakers. Not with a baby and a loud-music-hating wife around.

my pops-in-laws car finally went belly up and got to the point where it was just not worth fixing so we had it towed to the junkyard ...

so, today we went around looking for a few years old Subaru Forester ... drove about 4 different ones. I can see why Subaru's have the following they do.
They have a certain something that does not say Japanese at all ... its almost like an old school American car in ways of comfort. It's fun ... but it still has the reliability of Jap cars.
He's buying one this week ...

Interesting. I find them to be incredibly uncomfortable. Although, I agree with the non-Japanese feel you're talking about. I think it's the way the steering is weighted.
Anyway, that said, I'm looking for something for the wife and then I'll be taking over the Outback. I'll be like NAD, but even more gay.

the Outback and the sedans are indeed less comfortable. But the Forester surprised me with very capable driving dynamics for a car this size (took 3 of them for a ride in Connecticut twisties) and the seats were nice and firm with tall backs. i felt very much like an adventurer. also like that the older ones are kind of rough around the edges.

Im pretty sure the seats and interior bits are shared between the Legacy and Forester lines. I dont understand how one could be more or less comfy than the other but oh well.

i really doubt the Legacy sedan has the same seats as the Forester ... the Forester almost has "captain chairs" ... and also more legroom in general than the Legacy ... for Lurch proportions anyway

so we picked up a 2005 Forester yesterday for my father in-law and I drove it for 40 miles ... I really love this freaking car! I get it now why Subaru owners are so loyal ... the Symetrical AWD makes the car feel so freaking balanced when you take off from a light or just need pickup on the highway. It does not feel Japanese at all. Too bad the mpg's are the pits in the city, because I would consider one as a second car down the line.

what other great AWD cars are out there? this was my first experience driving one for a reasonable distance.

Yep, my ex-fiance and I bought a Legacy and a Forester together on the same day, the differences between the two cars were immeasurable. With respect to the seats though, yeah, they were completely different - the Legacy didn't have that "Captain's style chair" and leg/headroom that the Forester had. The Legacy was fine for her, but it was pretty funny in that we initially agreed to trade cars like every other week just for fun and we both ended up too attached to the ones we bought for ourselves to want to drive anything else.

As for MPG, yeah, the Forester gets about 20 or so in the city, but around 28 on the highway and it's been great for me in that sense down here.

Awesome! That's *exactly* what I drive, right down to the year! :kickass:

awesome, had no idea Jason.

I gotta tell you, I was grinning more yesterday than I was when I got the Mazda3 ... there is something cool about that wagon, can't quite put my finger on it. it has a certain character.

LOL - you even posted in the pages of this thread where I talked about it before (pages 11 & 12). :)

It's a refined, affordable, reliable and extremely practical choice.
