Next Opeth Album

Songs off Orchid and Morningrise have taken me longer to get into but I don't see how that makes them better musically. Ghost Reveries and Watershed took me a while to appreciate but that's because they just sounded weird before I got all the subtleties through my head enough times.

Some songs off the first two albums, however, have taken me a while to appreciate because some riffs still just don't stick out, and so many parts are less memorable to me (I keep forgetting what the hell even happens after like 3 minutes of Advent, Nectar, In Mist She Was Standing, and The Apostle In Triumph) I just hear the same black metally sounds over and over I guess and fall half asleep while listening or something.

That said, I'm not trying to talk badly about those two albums in any way, and, after falling in love with GR, I'm sure that further listens can get me into Orchid as well (I've recently started liking The Twilight Is My Robe and Forest of October a lot more, good signs)

The next Opeth masterpiece must be "Stillwater Reveries" :) I think their most progressive album is Still Life.. but I love Blackwater Park's tones more than Still Life.. Ghost Reveries is amazing.. In my opinion, Watershed isn't a masterpiece but I love "Heir Apparent" too much.. Bridge of Sighs' cover perfect I think. In fact I hope next release will be more heavier and progressive than Watershed.

The first time I listened to Orchid I fell asleep. Same goes for Morningrise.
MAYH was the first album they did which I found any good.
Watershed might be their best.

Me too, except I didn't with Morningrise, waaay too catchy, though I was doing other things at the time of Black rose immortal and To bid you farewel (and I didn't listen to Eternal soul torture).

Actually I fell asleep with like 3 first listens with Orchid. (I think I might have with Still life too...)

But it's a huge mistake to act as if that was their creative peak and it went downhill, or that things became more accessible.

They did become ALOT more accessible, when I was a noob (or even noober, whatever) I thought that the covers of first 3 and D&D albums were terrible/awful/ugly, but I have since realized by that they are beautifull.
Anyway the idea was that the Watershed cover is actually cool, this is album that anyone could buy.
And the early material is not very acceccible unlike the new material like the single songs.

I didn't say I hated the album. I was commenting on the guy I though was your mortal enemy.

Actually, I'm able to have opinions that are not focused against him. If what he says makes sense to me, then I have no reason to disagree.

But I didn't want to say that "you hated the album", but that there was no problem in trying to like it (by listening to it 50+ times). It don't see it as a waste of time. It's alright.

Anyway, seems like some thought I really was trying to blast the guy, but I had in mind that it wasn't serious. philno's still such a dick, though. Yes, you misjudged him, mexicola. It's really insulting to get attacked by someone you just kind of.. defended. Fuc**ng backstabber. And please, stop editing your posts just to attack me, it's getting really annonying.

All I was saying was that if you hate an album after having listened to it let's say 5 times you're not gonna like after 51 times.

Who are you talking to in the rest of your post btw?

... Agree with Philno in that WS's progressiveness has a detrimental effect on the music. I'll use the first 50 or so seconds of TLE as an example... quite frankly, it's both gratuitous and lame.

I think the resulting effect of this need to create something which is so wildly different from previous albums is that the songwriting is beginning to become, dare I say it, slightly pretentious.
