I cant catch the relation. Opeth's albums without Steven were also awesome, equal or greater than in fact. It depends on Mikael's mood for me definitely.

No point hoping for different musical changes, just hope for it to be really good. You will have more of a chance of being happy if you do so, rather than oh please can it be softer/heavier.

I just hope we don't need to wait nearly three years for the next one as we did with Watershed. Otherwise I'm just hoping it's another album-sized step forward on the creative path Opeth have paved for themselves.

This would be a step back for Opeth. Opeth have always had a different sound from album to album. While we may have favourites in the albums, expecting them to reverse their creativity is ... stupid.

I guess he means the atmosphere which differs IMO. Between MAYH and BWP it was all the way the spooky, forestish atmosphere which made me like those records instantly (while SL was really hard to digest for me). D1 has a very dark atmosphere and GR is different again. I can't describe it but I like it.
But I don't really like the atmosphere of WS which is not present for me. Still the record is pretty good. Yet I would like the next record to have a different atmosphere/theme. That's just all I want.

Maybe the atmosphere I didn't like the most is the one of GR.
Don't misunderstand me,it's a great album.
Watershed has a strange atmosphere...It took me a few months to appreciate it in its "weirdness",but now I'm a huge fan of that kind of atmosphere.
Personally I would love to hear some new atmospheres. I don't know what kind,but I want something fresh,even though I appreciated a lot the ones of SL and BP.
I would love to hear some moments of pure fucking rage,like the moments inside of "Serenity Painted Death" and in "The Funeral Portrait".

in the Watershed Bonus DVD mike said that "The Lotus Eater" is where his head is musically, so could be a sign of what's to come. i'll be pretty happy if thats the sound their going for....as long as they keep the growling.

he also said in the lamentations documentary that he wanted to do a "black metal concept album" and that obviously never happened. i say we just wait and get excited knowing that opeth is still making music.
