No one has the right to determine whether or not an artist should make his living from his art. If someone works hard, they should be rewarded. Period. If it's all about the music, that's cool, then the money just goes into paying for his food and rent while he sits in his room writing more songs.
Honestly you missed what I was saying for that first part. I never said artists didn't have the right to depend on their art for a living, I merely said it would be realistic of them to understand that it may not happen and thus have a backup plan.
The world isn't nice, it doesn't give money to people that deserve it. My view is based on the idea that no matter how good my music may eventually get that doesn't mean I will turn a profit, because the mainstream seems to reward predictability and simplicity. All I meant was artists should hope for a profit and do what they can to achieve it, but it is not their right because so often good artists have gone poor, and that's the unfair way of the world.
Mp3s might not help but they are still a scapegoat for an industry too concerned with turning a profit, and not concerned enough with UNDERSTANDING listeners in a way which would in all likelihood increase sales anyways.
