You claimed Opeth's Ghost Reveries is "garbage". Thats just straight up disrespectful. Now I do beleive that some of us are "Opeth Worshippers" but the majority of us DO not think this way. We will not bash you if you give us reasoning behind your thoughts, rather than a dumbass statement such as "x is garbage". No one here is asking you to like the album, just to be a little respectful.

If you think calling one of Opeth's albums "garbage" isn't disrespectful, well, you're just a dumbass, plain and simple.

The thread did not call for an in depth analysis of Ghost Reveries. I simply used simple words to express my dislike for the album. You want reasons? Well, we would definitely go off topic if I stated them, since this topic is about the “next” Opeth album. What I original said was that I hoped the next Opeth record would be better than Ghost Reveries because I personally thought it “sucked.” I guess using the word “sucked” crossed your tolerance line.

Boo hoo. Deal with it. I am not going to sugar coat my language just because you do not like it.

The point is, you kids overreacted, which is fine. I understand what it is like to be zealous about a particular band, but to start throwing personal insults around is utterly ridiculous. I didn’t say the whole band sucked, just one album. Big deal.

Doesn't look the same to me, bro.

Negative comments are fine. There were tons of them at the release of the album (as with any album, not everyone has the same taste) but your comments have nothing constructive or intelligent to offer.

I think you suck. <- about as useful as your contribution.

Ghost Reveries is a bad album. It didn’t present any real progression for Opeth’s overall sound. However, I can see why people like it. It did contain two really good songs, but most of the album was automatically forgettable. It was also lacking in atmosphere. It was poor in comparison to past efforts, especially Still Life, which was a masterpiece. I do understand the importance of a band changing and evolving from album to album. However, to me Opeth’s Ghost Reveries was a lackluster effort. I wasn’t blown away by it.

I am hoping that some of you are not mistaking alternate turnings for innovation. While it is okay for Opeth to experiment with their sound and to try different things, they didn’t pull it off to the same degree of success as past albums. Boring drop tuning riffs is not innovation to me.

And although it didn’t play it as safe as Deliverance did, Ghost Reveries is not nearly as memorable as Still Life, My arms, you hearse, and Blackwater Park. It felt more like a regression than a progression. I also hated how overproduced the whole album was.... Ugh.

Satisfied?

Sorry to get back ON-topic, but I thought it would be cool to hear some more keyboards or even piano. Not Children of Bodom style wanking, but maybe a cool piano ballad or something, just beef up Per's sound a little more. Or not, whatever.

The end of "Deliverance" was brilliant. Gave the song an epic feel. However they tried to do the same thing with "Harlequin Forest" and it it didn't work as well.
i did say that thta

Oh I love the end of deliverance... trust me... and as someone mentioned... Played live the song just fucking slays... they could play that riff all night live and I would be rocking out just as hard at the end of the show:headbang:

It sounds great on the album too...but I could defenitly understand how someone listening to the song in my car would say "why the hell are they repeating this riff so many times".

Not that my musical judgement is amazing or anything. but I prolly would have stopped the riff and gone on to A Fair Judgement before the last 2 times it goes around...

i really really likethe end of deliverance, it rules, they tried it again with harlequin forest, but i don't think it had the same effect on this one.

^not really, deliverance is much more interesting, especially the way the cymbals are constant while the drums are in different time signatures.

also, i thinnk in deliverance it worked great, but now with harlequin forest they tried it again but it didn't sound as good

first off, short songs? fuck no.
although i must say that last album, i felt that they were just making the songs long "because" its the opeth thing to do. TGC is an excellent example of what im saying. TGC goes on and on and on... extremely boring and repetitive after the 7:09 mark. ehhh...

next album i would like to see more experimental songs like on blackwater park, and i would like to see a LOT more brutality (more deliverance-like). dont get me wrong i like atonement and isolation years, but i just feel that GR as an album isnt as heavy as i'd like it.

so... that and i'd like to see more complex guitarwork (like on BWP and SL)

+1 000 000

I'd like to see them go back to their roots a little bit...I know one of the greatest things about Opeth is their ability to change and offer something new with every song and every album...but i just love some of the more brutal, longer tracks from the first two albums. Orchid is an absolute masterpiece.
