Porcupine Tree - The Incident (2009)

yes wankerness always mentioned these lyrics when the topic came up. i never understood what is wrong with them. they are very simple, honest lyrics to a very simple song... and obviously they are very personal and completely directed to someone in particular.
well, I guess if one defines "good = poetic", then the "So low" lyrics are not good.

honest, personal - sure. but good in an artistic way, in an effort to use language creatively? hardly.

What's poetic anyway? Difficult sophisticated words tangled in waves of complication? Why isn't straight honesty enough? I totally agree with Don Corleone, he is one of the few in this forum who can open the mind completely regarding music.

again, I don't know about you guys but I certainly dont know any 10 year olds who think sex is boring, much less even have sex to begin with.

Yeah, the sentence is probably as shallow as it seems. You have obviously took the lyrics as they seem all the way and not thought deeper once because you as you said like to predict that you will download the new album and then decide it's shit and then leave it be... The point behind that is that a kid can sit in his room and get all the shallow satisfaction of the world as it seems for him, sickest kinds of pornography, all kinds of sickness that is the primitive reptilian mankind only seemingly evolved. Mankind is a giant brain that can seem evolved, but we're still the same cavemen, our primitive needs and deeds prove that fact, to the point that all joy of the gift of life is replased by fictional euphoria. A child thinks that ending up in Mtv in some sort of way exposing all the shallow needs in life is the same as succeeding. He will get a very twisted point of view, to the point that all of it looses it's value, and the kid's not even left his room. The only value in life is to be someone "important", to make an impact and be heard, by that filosophy you get suicide bombers and school shootings.
Wilson says: i don't claim it's the only truth, but it's my point of view and it's the only view i can write by.

who knows, this album could turn out being the best thing he's ever done.

but I don't have high hopes when I hear an opeth-like chord progression/riff in one part, "dancers to a discordant system" main riff in another, and lyrics like "I was born in 67, the year of sgt pepper"

Yeah tbh I don't think that those lyrics are shitty either. Honest is a definitely a good word to describe them. It's not an impressive display of writing but it gets the point across.

i got a theory going about what has been going on in this thread, along with countless other threads in countless other forums. every now and then, a band comes along that has that certain love/hate quality to their sound/image/whatever. i think porcupine tree is one of these bands. with people on both sides of the spectrum discussing the band, this escalates the situation. people who like the band are constantly "jizzing" over their music, thus "aggravating" the people who dont like the music. its annoying to keep hearing that shit about a band that you personally do not enjoy, and therefore causes you to hate the band even more. So this particular person decides to lash out and make harsh statements against the band. A person who loves the band reads this and obviously feels offended, and in the end, begins to like the band even more because of some sort of elitist pride in that they truly "get" the music whereas these other "bozos" have no fucking clue whats going on. it seems like a "vicious cycle" imo. i dont know i may be wrong and this probably doesnt apply to everyone here, but it just seems to happen so much.

i recently got into opeth and through this forum i have been able to get into many other bands including porcupine tree. i havent posted until now but i have been "lurking" around for about a year now. if it wasnt for this forum i probably would not have heard of a lot of the bands that i have really started to enjoy, but at the same time it seems like over half of the threads turn into bullshit like this.

its one thing to debate, its another to bicker like this.

why attack people for their musical interests?
why bitch about a band you have lost interest in?
why bitch about anything?

i guess because its fun.
i disagree with a lot of the arguments and everything, and yet i find myself constantly reading them anyway. so i dont know. i guess i havent really made any point here. i've just completely confused myself.

oh and for the record, i would have to say that i am excited for this new release regardless of anything. my favorite album (so far, havent fully digested all of them) by pt is stupid dream. i feel a personal connection to a lot of the lyrics, and i find the music to be stellar as well.

i like the overall "vibe" (cant really explain further lol) of foabp, even though i dont personally feel any connection to the lyrics. for me, in rock/metal i feel that bad lyrics are easy to overcome. in other genres, such as pop/rap/country its a lot more difficult, which is why i feel myself disliking most that comes from those genres.

Haha, I enjoy that I never saw this thread today yet it repeatedly talks about me.

My problem with PT lyrics such as those quoted is that they're just so blunt, but not in a GOOD way. Lyrics discussing shocking situations or something, like say, Tori Amos's "me and a gun," work fine as blunt, but something like this is like the heart pangs of the average college student and aren't at all describing some devastating incident. They're too boring to live without some sprucing up. They're the lyrical equivalent of a three-chord folk rock song. They just come across as lazy to me. It's not that I can't identify with the situation, it's that if I want to listen to lyrics about extremely pedestrian hurtful situations that have happened to me in my extremely pedestrian life, I want to listen to lyrics written by someone who has a more interesting command of the english language than myself, otherwise what is the point? Same deal with music! For an example of the RIGHT way to write breakup lyrics, see Jeff Buckley's "Lover You Should Have Come Over."

In Absentia had pretty good lyrics. Fear of a Blank Planet's were intermittently terrible and alright.

I now expect to read some more of these flame posts this topic is devolving into accusing anyone who doesn't like every porcupine tree lyric ever written of being a troll.

^I mentioned your name because your posts about this subject were hilarious. It takes a big idiot to think that you were trolling because you dislike PT's lyrics.

TROLL!!

What do you mean lol?
You don't know what he felt when he wrote that..
Atleast steven writes lyrics with real emotions, not some artificial, senseless trivial crap i'm sure you love...

i mean lol as in "lol, those lyrics blow". this is clearly a matter of opinion, and my opinion is that generally, his lyrics are garbage. i don't really care what he felt when he wrote the lyrics, because that's totally irrelevant. what counts is the emotions the lyrics convey to me, not what was going through his head when he sat down and wrote the lyrics.

secondly, you have no idea what lyrics i enjoy, and that's completely besides the point.

Koi always comes into threads where anyone says anything even slightly bad about Steven Wilson with the same tone as a muslim extremist who's heard someone insult Muhammad.
