The Doom Metal thread

Long post ahead:

Define "this."

If what you mean by "this" is that defeatist attitude/lyrics, piano, violins, romanticism, etc...then I hope that question was rhetorical.

Wow, nice hasty over-generalization. Many forms of metal excluding various forms of Doom use multiple instruments other than the standard guitar, bass, drum setup. And infinitely more types of music use the romantic mindset than just doom metal; even other metal genres do it more (Black metal should be most obvious).

And lyrically, they are very similar,
Here are a few Black Sabbath examples:

Black Sabbath

What is this that stands before me?
Figure in black which points at me
Turn around quick, and start to run
Find out I'm the chosen one
Oh nooo!
Big black shape with eyes of fire
Telling people their desire
Satan's sitting there, he's smiling
Watches those flames get higher and higher
Oh no, no, please God help me!
Is it the end, my friend?
Satan's coming 'round the bend
People running 'cause they're scared
The people better go and beware!
No, no, please, no!

Wicked World

The world today is such a wicked place
Fighting going on between the human race
People got to work just to earn their bread
While people just across the sea
Are counting their dead

A politician's job they say is very high
'Cos he has to choose who's got to go and die
They can put a man on the moon quite easy
While people here on earth are dying of old diseases

A woman goes to work every day after day
She just goes to work just to earn her pay
Child sitting crying by a life that's harder
He doesn't even know who is his father

and the lyrics to the song where modern forms of "Doom" actually took the genre name (and imagery no less, usually minus the political affiliations):

Hand of Doom

What you gonna do? Time's caught up with you
Now you wait your turn, you know there's no return
Take your written rules, you join the other fools
Turn to something new, now it's killing you

First it was the bomb, Vietnam napalm
Disillusioning, you push the needle in
From life you escape, reality's that way
Colours in your mind satisfy your time

Oh you, you know you must be blind
To do something like this
To take the sleep that you don't know
You're giving Death a kiss,
Oh, little fool now

Your mind is full of pleasure
Your body's looking ill
To you it's shallow leisure
So drop the acid pill, don't stop to think now

You're having a good time baby
But that won't last
Your mind's all full of things
You're living too fast
Go out enjoy yourself
Don't bottle it in
You need someone to help you
To stick the needle in, yeah

Now you know the scene, your skin starts turning green
Your eyes no longer seeing life's reality
Push the needle in, face death's sickly grin
Holes are in your skin, caused by deadly pin

Head starts spinning 'round, you fall down to the ground
Feel your body heave, Death's hands starts to weave
It's too late to turn, you won't want to learn
Price of life you cry, now you're gonna die!

Drugs, destruction, pain, rotting away, perverse visions of reality, synonyms et al. - of course modern funeral doom lyrics aren't going to be exactly the same as the shit above, why would it be? There is a HUGE gap not only in time, but in alternative influences; furthermore, not all bands in the same genre have to have the same lyrical goal - hence why there are bands that center around other types of themes (history, cosmology, torture, philosophy, various writers, etc) than the "gothicy romanticist bullshit" you're speaking about.

Even with the political and personal outlook in the lyrics listed above, it is traditional as people to deviate from that which came before, hence why music as a culture/entertainment evolves. But they are relatively close to each other in that most well written lyrics are commentaries on personal views or stories of a given subject. Whether the lyrics are fatalist or not is up to the actual writer and the view being presented, and seeing as people throughout history have expressed such views... it's best not to single out one metal sub-genre just because you don’t agree with the current vernacular.

Saying that though, most lyricists are horrible at expressing their actual views and emotions in written word, hence why the actual music is supposed to equate these feelings on a physical level (rather than a cerebral level). Just because what you hear is the final product of the body of work for a cd/lp/ep/etc., does not mean the original intention of the music was not lost in any other minute ways. Shitty lyrics are part of life, either deal with it or ignore it.

But in all logical honesty, this doesn't really seem like you're angry about the music, it really seems that you don’t appreciate the misnomer of the terms applied to each genre (you said traditional doom metal = heavy metal if I remember). There is a reason Funeral Doom is known as a sub-genre, hence the different monitor. I agree with you on this point though, I would be pissed too (If I agreed with you that is).
So in the end, you're correct in a way...Funeral Doom is not Doom metal; it's merely an altered extension of it.

edit: wait, i think it was Necuratul's comment about doom not slow enough...whatever :erk: misdirected comments suck.

Seraphim, that whole argument just went way beyond anything it should have been and then it came back around full-circle. :loco:

I appreciate you taking the time to type that all out, but like I said, I have nothing further to add.

PS - I think you are misinterpreting the message within the Sabbath songs.

We just need to get on with the recommendation discussion if anybody needs any.

Yeah, I just bought it. I like Firewood even better so far, but this is great, as well. I love the Pentagram/Jethro Tull (moreso on second album)/Sabbath feel. Rules.

Indeed. I like their production, it sounds so true to the original sound...sounds like some gritty old tape long forgotten and unearthed in some archaic record store after years!

Funeral Doom is clearly doom metal. Not all styles of music stay the same: evolution is necessary to avoid stagnation. Maybe some want everything to stay the same, but that's fundamentally idiotic. Without change there is nothing of merit. I'd rather listen to My Dying Bride than St Vitus any fucking day of the week, for instance. Not of course that MDB are funeral doom or even close to it, but they are gothic inspired with romantic lyrics and violins, which was disparaged in this thread.

He's probably 5'4 120 lbs soaking wet and would get his ass kicked by a girl. This seems to be the case with most internet tough guys who try to appear all hard on teh internet.

Not like you though obviously because you are teh hardest tough cunt on all teh internets. No foolin.

I don't consider Funeral Doom and Traditional Doom to be under the same umbrella because Funeral Doom sounds like it spawned much more so out of the extreme metal scene, whereas Traditional Doom branched out from Black Sabbath/Pentagram/Saint Vitus/Trouble. Completely different beasts, really the only thing they have in common is that they're both slower than all other forms of Metal (generally). Not that that makes Funeral Doom bad, I just don't place them in the same area categorically speaking.

Exactly. Because they aren't the same. Youre right.

Musical style A has been...then Musical style B comes along and attaches itself to term for style A. There was no progression people, so thats not the argument.

Godamnit, enough of this already. :heh:

I understand black sabbath lyrics; hence why I said "political opinion aside" in that mass of text somewhere; either way, I thought I covered all points pretty good.

and Thergothon is the greatest :kickass:
