 man that looks familiar. What movie is that from?

While reading through the Midsommar IMDB reviews i noticed its getting a lot of comparisons to The Wicker Man. Also getting a shit ton of hate because of it too. Dont remember seeing that one.

I remember him being one of the crazy redneck brothers in Smokin Aces, and he's the lead male in Wonder Woman, but this is the first time where I've seen him do something that shows his chops. Definitely liked the guy in this one.

Also the director of Hell or High Water did that 2018 movie Outlaw King with Pine in the lead, might watch that soon just cos.

Wow, haven't seen smokin aces in a long time. Never saw Wonder Woman. Had to look up Outlaw King, looks good, might give it a shot. But yeah thought he did good in Hell or High Water.

 man that looks familiar. What movie is that from?

Ha it's a slice of italian sleaze and cheese..

Watched some stuff last night:

Platform-2019-poster.jpg

The Platform - Spanish dystopian sci-fi prison film on Netflix. Heavy class analysis stuff going on here, it was aight, some pretty gross scenes and some unflinching violence but felt a bit sterile. Worth seeing at least once, especially if the idea of Cube meets High Rise appeals to you, even though it's not as good as either.

Loving You - The earliest Johnnie To film I've seen so far (I think, 1995) and it definitely shows. He was still searching for his style/voice at this point for sure, littered with classic Hong Kongisms and in particular the first act is 100% John Woo, though some of To's style is present in the attention he pays to the internal machinations of law enforcement. Most of the middle act is dedicated to melodrama but it returns to Woo craziness in the finale. Fun movie overall but nothing that hadn't already been done by Woo and Chan in the 80's.

nice, i haven’t seen that JT. while i like the early stuff i’ve seen it’s quite derivative for sure, tsui hark was a big influence as well and produced some of his stuff in the beginning (he’s also cited king hu as his biggest influence iirc). he didn’t really come into his own until about ‘97 or so when he broke away to form milkyway image.

I own a bunch of those earlier martial arts period films Johnnie To did but haven't watched them yet, haven't felt the urge haha. I can see how Tsui Hark would have been big influences on his early period for sure. Very briefly in Loving You there are even some wire work stunts.

Is Lifeline before or after Milkyway Image? That's one of the other early not-martial arts films by him I have.

lifeline actually tends to be regarded as the first proper johnnie to film and it came out after he split to form milkyway, but isn't itself a milkyway production. it's pretty rough around the edges, the writing is dripping with cheese but the talent is already there in how he constructs the big scenes, especially the huge epic 50 minute firefighting finale lol. one of the weakest tos i've seen though tbh.

my highest recommendations for pre '00s johnnie to would be the mission and the longest nite (which was officially directed patrick yau but ghost-directed by to), both awesome. i'm also fond of a hero never dies, running out of time and the big heat. i think the heroic trio is supposed to be cool as well but i haven't seen that.

Was just reminiscing about seeing the Italian film Ratman. Has anyone else seen this? Rather than using a puppet for their mutant rat, the creature is played by dwarf Nelson de la Rosa. I don't think it's as bad as RYM & IMDb ratings would have you believe. I love the ending.
