The Photography Thread

This is DeGraves Expresso, Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC.

I've been in love with it since I first went many years ago. It might be freezing cold but you're cheating yourself if you sit inside and not in the lane with everyone else. Splendid coffee and luscious penne dishes too. I could live there.

How much did you get the 17-55 for? I've heard a lot of good things about it, it's just over twice the price of the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 :(

@ aug and The NightsBane - thanks!

And whoa, I didn't realize a macro ring flash was that expensive... ouch!

@Hubster - love the second shot! You should send it in to them or something.

Melbourne Museum, Carlton, VIC (1)

This is how the overhead structure really looks - it's colossal and you really feel dwarfed by it. I loved it, feels so surreal.

Melbourne Museum, Carlton, VIC (2).

I love the design of this museum. Long and minimal hallways. The low-lying sun provides some nice streaks of light in the afternoon.

That second photo is fantastic, the lighting, atmosphere, it's great.

First one is good stuff too.

Here are some shots I've gotten in Chicago so far:

A church at Elmhurst College, also HDR but not as crazy/out there as the image I posted earlier

And then some shoots of the gloomy weather that I've been subjected to so far

Architecture is so fucking hard to shoot. It shits me.

Below is some brushed metal detailing reflecting traffic lights nearby. On a building near Martin Place, Sydney. No post-processing apart from resizing.

While I was in Melbourne on the weekend, I saw a very heated protest in the city. The far-right Australian Defence League clashed with leftist protesters in regards to the dangers of Australia being Islamicised. Luckily, I had my Canon 7D handy :)

It got risky at times, both sides were VERY heated and there were clashes.

This is my first real attempt at political photojournalism. It was quite an experience.

 :worship:
the pics of the buildings are also ace!

Thanks Alina! Had a perfect angle with the way the light was illuminating his hair like that, so just kept shooting until I had the best one, it's probably one of my favorite concert pics I've done so far!

Great pics Pess. The first one looks like something out of Lord of the Rings almost, hahaha. But holy fuck 2200 shots?? The most I've had from a show is like 600-700 so far, I think. Having to go through that many when only aiming anywhere from 15-25 is taxing. But then again you want to get the best facial expressions and so on too... And how were your lighting conditions? Unfortunately at the place I went to a couple times (Reggies Rock club) it was... manageable, but not by much (1600/3200 ISO @ around 1/80, 2.8).

I was able to score so many shots because I have a class 4 64gb card in my camera. Granted it's too slow for video, but it's great for my camera (especially since its got such a slow buffer :(). For the first time I actually felt really limited with my camera, because I would have these fucking phenomenal shots lined up, but my camera had to wait for the damned pipeline to clear because the max speed on the t2i is 3.7fps.

Lighting was honestly pretty damned decent for Deception & Gravehill, Warbeast was also pretty good - maybe even a smidge better light-wise than the prior two bands. Heathan had some fucking awful lighting half the time, but the other half was fantastic (I have a couple orange on black shots that look like they were taken during armageddon).

Destructions lighting sucked. Whereas Heathen used fog lightly, to give that nice smokey effect, Destruction flat out flooded the place, then decided to aim strobes straight into the crowd and fire them as fast as they could for as long as they could. I, much like Destruction's musical career, gave up less than a quarter of the way through.

Oh fuck, how expensive was that? Thats fucking huge! Well its SD not Compact Flash right? CF is expensive :( I have two 4gb CF cards, and an 8 and 4 gb SD card for the XS (but selling it once I'm back anyways).

That reason is the reason why I wanted to upgrade. The 40d can go through 17 continues RAW shots at 6.5 fps, fucking fast. Even with the setting of reduced noise in high ISO, it can go through 6 shots, and I usually don't have a problem. It's really noticeable when compared to my XS.

What sucked at the show I was at, was during Hate and Belphegor there was a continuous, unchanging red light, and nothing more. It was fucking annoying, and didn't give me much to work with at all, plus it was like 3200, 1/40-60 and 2.8 :erk:

And did you get a photopass for that or just bring the camera in? I didn't have a photopass for either of the shows but fortunately the venue doesn't care about cameras.

On the plus side, I have photopass+entry for Sleep, Amon Amarth, Exhumed/Macabre and Grave/Pathology :kickass: all thanks to Earsplit PR. If you can find some sort of magazine or website to work for, then get on Earsplits PR list, they can set you up with pretty much any show of the bands they cover (which is a fuckload!)

The card (SDXC) was around $100. I was on the table about whether or not to get it, because if I upgrade the camera then it will be to CF (it's what both the 5dmkII and 7D use). I still have two 8gb cards for backup stuff, but I figured I could just include the massive card in the price whenever I get to selling the T2i.

I had a photopass, I know half of Gravehill and Deception, but it was Mikey from Gravehill that got me in.

Although I'm not looking for work, I do hope that these pictures will be able to get me a handle for a mini-magazine - that would rule. I'll look into earsplit.

Tangent: That second picture in my previous post is at ISO 3200, I'm surprised at how well it cleaned up!

May as well post a few more from that night:

Fun little trivia: This is Matt Harvey of Exhumed. I think he boned out after they played (half the band did).

Dayum, but the freedom to shoot that much must be nice I suppose... I saw a 128gb CF card for like $300 HAHA, fuck that though. Too much space/price.

But yeah, just including it in the price will work out. Once I get back to Vegas I need to sell my XS and that other stuff, and then finish paying off the 70-200mm. Maybe in a couple months I'll upgrade to the 2.8, we'll see.

And ah I see, cool stuff then! I don't mean like anything too serious, something more laid back, like working at your own pace/when there are good shows (basically what I do for FMR and The Inarguable). But yeah, look around for some LA area metal webzines, and see if you can submit some stuff for like photos+review and so on. Then contact Earsplit or something.

For 3200 that's impressive! Unfortunately, even at 3200, and at like 1/50, the pictures I shot were still somewhat underexposed from that past show during some of the bands, fucking sucks :erk: I don't think I could have managed with the XS at 1600, unless I just used the 50mm 1.8.
