The thread where you talk about non-metal music you like.

Soundgarden wins by far on the strength of Badmotorfinger alone, though Louder Than Love is good too. Nirvana a respectable second. I enjoy maybe half of the first STP album, that's it.

I would have said Soundgarden by a mile back in the day but I think STP's first 3 albums are all pretty great so they're about even for me these days. I probably love Nirvana more than both of them though.

These days I'd probably say Nirvana is the best of them all, except maybe early Melvins.

I used to prefer Mudhoney to them all, but they didn't have much long lasting appeal, which is understandable since they're basically just a watered down The Stooges.

That said, the whole scene was massively overrated.

I've really grown to love Bleach over the years, whereas the rest of the bands mentioned have decent albums but nothing that does a lot for me or makes me want to return time and time again. Soundgarden are cool, but really I think metalheads just like them because they use 70's hard rock riffing. Alice In Chains after their debut are also pretty cool, but the singer is so irritatingly stereotypically 90's that it turns me off sometimes.

TAD is my favourite of the Seattle bands though, also The Mentors deserve a mention, haha.

Basically, if I wanna hear bands trying to do 70's hard rock, I'll listen to bands actually from that period because they're way better. Nirvana to me at least bring something somewhat new to the table.

Pretty much. It's a safe choice to me when you gravitate towards the almost-metal bands in every "scene" or whatever.

Edit: Unless you're saying your favourite Soundgarden is pre-Badmotorfinger?

This is so good.

there was too much good music in the 90's. we got spoiled. so much great shit in the underground too

I just think that's kind of disingenuous when you choose the one Nirvana album that sounds the most like a Melvins record. Sure, I like Bleach but every other album Nirvana made bores the crap out of me while Badmotorfinger, Louder than Love, Dirt, Facelift, Bullhead, Stag, Houdini, Jar of Flies, etc. blow In Utero and Nevermind out of the water. By the way, Nirvana "bringing something new to the table"? I disagree. A lot.

EDIT: Not to mention that you heavily oversimplify Soundgarden's musicianship.

Fair enough. TAD blows them all out of the water anyway. ;)

For me Melvins' best albums go like this:

Bullhead > Ozma > Houdini > Gluey Porch Treatments > Lysol > Prick > Stoner Witch

Yeah, that works.

About Soundgarden though, you have to admit that there is some monstrous bass-playing on Badmotorfinger. I mean, holy shit...that was one of the highlights of the album.

Ben Shepherd rules. Him and Matt Cameron were a fucking monster rhythm section.

Superunknown is great also imo.
