It also has radio based off of everything you listen to, and it gives you pretty accurate recommendations.

Yeah, I kinda hated myself too when I first signed up. But it really doesn't take that much effort to scrobble your music (if you're not obsessive about it), and it's fun to see the charts every now and then.

Also, last.fm is damn useful for doing research on bands, and there are a lot of songs uploaded to it. So it's not just a place for being trendy.
