English schools have 3 options generally; free food if your parents get below a certain wage, paying for the exact same food if they don't or bringing your own.

My mother always liked to give me weird packed lunches with those marzipan japanese things in or a cold curry or a kiwi fruit to be eaten with only a spoon.

Still better than badly cooked Yorkshire puddings (not actual pudding btw) and smash.
