Forgot about Virtua Fighter. First ever 3D fighting game I think.

Yup it was the first true 3d fighting game. There are so many other fighting games ive played and still own. Eternal Champions, Darkstalkers, Clayfighter, Bloody Roar, Power Stone(which is kind of similar to Smash Bros), Way of the Warrior(3DO), TMNT Tournament Fighters, The Last Blade, World Heroes, Battle Arena Toshinden, the shitty Def Jam fighting game and a bunch of other ones that im forgetting.

I've also heard the latest Dragon Ball fighting game is pretty solid but ive never played any of thhose games and have never watched the series.

SF will always be my favourite fighter.

Fanboyism aside, it definitely is the best VS franchise ever. Imo SFII is one of the greatest and most important video games of all time.

SFII is awesome. Crazy how Ryu & Ken were the only returning characters from the first game though.

Never played any of the SF games after II. Do any of the later releases live up to that level of awesomeness?

Yeah Sagat is in the first game(that where Ryu gives him the scar). Ryu had red hair and red shoes

Ryu and Ken are the only two players you can choose but some of the guys(Sagat, Adon, Birdie, Eagle and Gen) are also in other SF games. Oh and "Mike" was basically a prototype Balrog.

Sagat has been my main ever since SFII Turbo/Championship Edition

Always loved Blanka. I just remember when playing the game as a kid it'd be just so easy make him buzz with electricity. All you had to do was hold the down button and tap another button IIRC. Similar to E-Honda's crazy hand thing.

Dal Sim was the hardest opponent IMO. His elastic limbs are always hard to counter, plus he'd shoot fireballs at you.

I've always mained Ken as boring as that probably is. I can't really speak on how good the post-SF2 games are, not really a big enough fighter gamer to make that judgement, but I thought SF5 was pretty meh.

Yes almost all of them are good. SFIII was godly and a technical masterpiece, all the SF Alpha games rule and SFIV was the shit and imo probably the greatest modern fighting game around, but SFV might just be better.

SFIV is more similar to the SFII series and is a tad bit more fast paced and SFV is more similar to SFIII in that it's a bit more calculated and technical, that being said they are both still deep as fuck and you would never survive playing others online unless you master whoever you play with. Only fighting franchise that is as deep(and maybe a little deeper) is the King of Fighters games ... which is probably the hardest fighting game series to master.

Ken is a good character to main imo. One of those characters that is a good all-rounder.

Wow, that's crazy. I had a squiz online & saw that SFIII was released in '97. Yet when I was a kid I'd never even heard about it. SFII was still all the rage for several years after its release.

Maybe fighting games just had a dip in popularity overall during that time, but then again Tekken 3 was pretty huge.

Tekken 3 was my introduction to the franchise. Great place to start too! Yoshimitsu will always be a beast.

yeah SFIII wasnt as big with the casuals but is was huge in the FGC(fighting game community). I dont think the original SFIII was released on many consoles(definitely not the 16-bit ones). My copy was the Dreamcast version. But yeah there was a time where 3d fighting games blew up and were taking over but that's also when Capcom introduced the X-Men(Children of Atom) and Marvel vs Capcom games.

One of my favorite games ever was when Capcom and SNK(KoF, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown etc) actually collaborated with each other and released the SNK vs Capcom series.

Think that was more of an American thing in general. Don't think we ever had that arcade culture down here.

I went to the arcades a few times, we definitely had that here, and I had some friends growing up who were into the whole arcade thing. I was just too dirt poor to ever do any of it lmao.

i love Tekken 3, but T2 and Tag Tournament will always be my fav. Im a Heichachi main and i still go on killer win streaks at the arcades when i play those games. I can easily ebat the CPU on almost any difficulty(and if you know arcades machines, you know they set difficulty is set way higher on them). Best 3D fighting game franchise imo.

I grew up in dark arcades filled cigarette smoke and sluts, lol. Not events but sometimes there would be like 20 of us huddled up around the same machine for hours having our own little tourneys with everyone watching like it was some spectacle. I remember when they first brought in the 2 Mortal Kombat II(one of the best fighting games ever) machines to Pac Man Arcade(the name of our old OG spot), that plays went bonkers.

edit: Ive went to a bunch of events in recent years, but local ones. And i dont wanna brag, but im pretty fucking good.
