You don't have to if you are skilled in the art of psychological manipulation. Cats are shameless, but dogs are capable of emotion, particularly that of guilt. On the off-chance your kitty has an oopsy and shits, pisses, or vomits all over the floor, do you think it's going to whimper or hide when you approach? No, it doesn't give care, the only reason it can be trained to shit in a litter box at all is because of impulsive biological hard-wiring. A dog, though? It will hate itself for its moment of weakness. Even Sparky the pug, the wily bastard he was, could feel it. Left in his cage for the better part of the day while the family was out and about, the first thing he did upon our entry after emitting a yelp of shock was to consume his own feces. Because he's a filthy, dumb dog, you say? Wrong. Because he feared punishment? Not quite. It was because he knew he deserved it. Try teaching a cat that.
