Who "also" hates Hip Hop???

What I'm saying is, too many of you are closeminded metalheads who will give few other genres a chance, and if you do you usually make generalizations based on a few shitty mainstream artists.

I agree with almost every count of what in limbow said, and I think people should open their minds before opening their mouths.

Music is music. Generalizing it or "hating" it because of appearance or how it's made is a pointless thing to do, and why even hate any kind of music? I'm not even talking about just rap, but all music that's shunned by some people of the metal community in general. Music is something there to invoke the emotions, but apparently some people happen to have a mental defect of sorts that makes them automatically assume some music is "shit" because of the performer's appearance or because of what other music it is categorized with. Seriously, I hate (and I use the with the strongest emphasis possible) the people who won't open up to music just because of it's look. It just shows that some people would rather be negative about things than be positive. :erk:

Oh, and if someone wants to leave me rep, negative or positive - don't be a pussy. Leave your name please. :err:

Hip Hop IS a progressive form of music because it is constantly evolving. Compare rap from the 80's to the 90's to now. It's changed completely, even if some core topics and lyrical ideas remain. Whereas most rock music is stuck in a time warp of copying old classic rock music made decades ago. Nothing about much of today's popular rock music is progressive, even if it is called "prog" or whatever. I'm just stating the facts, I'm not saying hip hop is better than everything else, I love all types of music... I don't give a fuck if this is a "metal" forum, I would expect you guys to be less closeminded... like Mikael said in the GR documentary, pure metalheads aren't right for Opeth because they're much too openminded to be bound by the label "metal", and their music shows it.

While I agree with your sentiments, but I feel that Hip-hop is actually progressing just as much as metal is - underground or not (in an overpopulated market, it's hard for chance to erupt so easily). Both rely on the same foundational structure that is inherent to each; if you were to change the base structure, it wouldn't be hip-hop or metal. It's the exact same style, it just has a few new elements incorporated into it.

The difference in some of these arguments is categorization. Where many people categorize hip-hop in one genre, many people categorize metal into man; they ail to see that in the entire picture, metal is quite a large evolving entity...many do not feel this way about hip-hop because all of it relies on similar beats (of course with varying time signatures...hopefully), and rhymed verse - many people still feel that when something new happens in it (mainstream or underground), many people latch onto this new form and exploit it (it happens in everything though - hip-hop just has a MUCH larger audiance).

example:
here are some common rap/hip-hop themes that have emerged, and then everyone latched onto them:
Life/hanging out (old school)
Gangster bullshit
more gangster bullshit
fucking bitches
feelings
Gore
pimping
politics
food (laffy taffy/milkshake/etc.)
inserting guitar tracks from old songs into rap songs
gangster shit.
et al.

obviously the list above is from the mainstream perspective (although, if that were true, feelings and politics would be almost gone from that list, along with gore.)

Well, this has turned into a rant - so fuck the rest of whatever I was writing.

Most mainstream metal is complete shite, whereas actually a lot of fairly commercial hip hop is great.

Hip hop is actually a progressive genre, whereas metal/prog-metal/death,black,etc metal is merely drawing on past influences. This isn't to say it make it inherently better or anything, but hip hop is constantly evolving and progressing with the advent of new technologies and ideas, and with the help of the never-ending innovations possible with turntabling. Trust me, I like a ton of various genres, and there is a lot of pure shit that passes for "hip hop" these days (namely anything called crunk, and most radio rap), I'm just stating the obvious that hip hop is a very progressive genre and much more so than the form of rock you'll hear today.

Who cares whether it's technically a "band" or not? Most of the great hip hop groups have been actual groups of people (Public Enemy, Wu-Tang, NWA) and a lot of more recent talents are constantly collaberating with each other as if they were in a band together. (Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Kanye, Common, Nas) Anyone who dismisses an entire GENRE of music to be terrible is an idiot. I feel inclined to do such a thing with country music, but all I know about country music is some shitty mainstream current shit and Johnny Cash (who I'm sure has some good stuff I just haven't gotten into him)... so it's pretty much the same when you all dismiss hip hop as utter crap. Hip hop, or at least electronically inclined music, seems to be the future of music, whether you or I like it or not. I'm not saying I do. I love Opeth and a ton of metal and prog bands past and present, also noise-rock like Acid Mothers Temple, Boris, etc. which all rely on traditional instruments in most songs. But I'm just trying to reveal the pure ignorance many of you (and a lot of likeminded, closeminded "METALHEADS") seem to possess.

I don't completely agree with you but that one comment is absolutely spot on.

rap is not actually progressive, I only find underground groups like Aesop Rock, and other specific groups in rap to be even remotely progressive or forward-thinking, hip-hop musically and most certainly lyrically has not progressed that much in the decades since it was spawned...

If you think I am dismissing an entire genre, you are wrong. I actually like some good Hip-Hop/Rap!!! Also I am interested in more genres than metal. I am tired of the comments about me being close-minded, when this is obviously not the case

"anyone who dismisses an entire genre of music to be terible is an idot"

what an original comment

"metal/prog-metal/death,black,etc metal is merely drawing on past influences"

NO

The only thing those genres have in common is that they are guitar-based. Even the mention of various genres in metal denotes progression. Where are the different styles of rap music????

LOL at this thread. Even the title, whereby, for some silly reason, the thread instigator decided to put "also" in speech marks, made me lololol.

the reason I put "also" in quotes was because I initially heard that statemnet off the Lamentations DVD and it was one of the most inpirational statements I ever heard. When you consider the fact that the country I am from, and still reside in "America" has bent over to hip hop mainstream, then you would understand how appreciative I was when I heard the anti-hip hop remark. :)

If you are a rap lover so be it, I was when I didn't know shit about music and that was in early high school, but since then progressed.

I don't think you mean parenthesis...but still, I see your point.

And no, I'm by no means a ''rap lover''. Although, I do appreciate some early artists in the genre; those that tend to have something worth putting across lyrically, and in a listenable, convincing manner. However, I generally despise modern mainstream Hip Hop, and am not a real advocate of the music in any way.

Man, I almost feel sorry for those who listen to nothing but metal. Not that I'm saying that about any specific person on this board, since this is just about hip hop, but there are so many other forms of good music out there. And there is some good hip hop too, common, grandmaster flash and the furious five, mos def, black eyed peas. The really good stuff is in positive hip hop or socially conscious hip hop. Part of the appeal to me lies in the lyrics, just listen to The Message.

The Black Eyed Peas (Backstreet Boys) are beyond horrible

Awesome neg rep "Hip hop is for fags like you"... I don't even really like hip hop, however, I'm not gonna let dumbasses shit all over a genre based on pure stupidity and generalizations.

lol hating whole genres of music is utterly pointless. think of all the people who view metal is just a bunch of hairy losers wacking their instruments with as fast as they can and screaming incoherently.

true, but considering the media is full of unpredecentedlyerkworthy amounts of hip/hop and rap, it's not difficult to see where the generalization comes from. not to say that the modern metal scene isn't terrible either...
