That was the title of an article today in the Wall Street Journal.
An excerpt and quote from the HSAN (Hip-Hop Summit Action Network), an advocacy group for the rap industry:
Mr Imus is NOT a hip-hop artist or a poet. Hip-hop artists rap about what they see, hear, and feel around them, their experience of the world. Like the artists throughout history, their messages are a mirror of what is right and wrong with society."
and....
"Language of hip-hop is now mainstream and in play in both schoolyards and penthouses. In the world of hip hip, a woman who DISPLEASES THE NARRATOR is often referred to as a 'ho' ".
To disrespect women is an everyday thing, a sign of authority and virility. Because it's a common enough expression in some circles, Imus thought their listeners would let their remarks slide.
So basically, if you is white, don't be using the hip hop language. Not even Eminem does that.
Dunno about Vanilla Ice.
Discuss.
