Hate towards nu-metal

Thinking on it, my issue with most nu-metal is when they're taken as a whole, because there are many bands who aren't nu-metal that have incorporated nu-metal influences to good effect. Obscura by Gorguts is a common example around here so I won't bother going into detail but there are other bands like Alienation Mental who followed up their technical deathgrind masterpiece Ball Spouter with Psychopathicolorspectrum that utilized many nu-metal elements and it sounds great.

Korn are probably for me the best of all the nu-metal bands, not just because they were one of the first and therefore can at the very least be considered original, but I agree with Tera they do have some cool riffs and an overall twisted kind of sound that I find appealing in certain moods. I'm pretty fond of the demo version of "Daddy" with its similarities to bands like Acid Bath, you can hear a good bit of Ministry in Korn's demo and debut as well.

That fucking demo of Daddy is the best thing they have imo. Even for the whole cringey "WHY DID MOMMY TOUCH ME THERE?" bit in the middle, its actually kinda put into great effect cuz it sounds kinda taunting there after it. And Jon can growl pretty well too (the "FOLLOW ME" bit)

Acid Bath get sorta lumped into a nu-metal type thing anyway, if not for songs like What Color is Death and Cheap Vodka. They also sorta do what Slipknot does but do it faaar better than they do.

Edit: Dystopia is proto-nu metal, fight me.

WTF, did HBB hack CIGs account? one delusional persons thoughts don't make it a "common opinion" around here. Obscura has zero nu metal dude. There is zero nu metal influence on that album. Those "elements" all come form other places and have existed long before nu metal was around. What a fucking ridiculous statement.

The only song on Obscura that I hear nu-metal influence in is "Nostalgia." That riff half way in. That weird bouncy, chromatic djenty stuff.

I wouldn't say inspired, but its very close to that style of riff. It really does sound like a Korn riff.
Probably Meshuggah influenced I'd bet.

Dystopia nu-metal????

There's some HBB level sigworthy shit being spewed in this thread. Lets just go ahead and call Slayer death too while were at it.

and clearly i mean their older stuff, newer stuff is obviously groove/numetal

Personally I was never convinced Obscura was nu-metal, I remember debating HBB about it briefly because I think he claimed they were inspired by Korn's debut album and I pointed out that Gorguts started writing Obscura in like 1993 before Korn had even debuted. I just threw it in there to try and pre-empt anybody replying to me with it. It has some strange dissonant avant-garde riffs and I suppose to some that makes it sound like nu-metal.

strange dissonant avant-garde riffs sound like nu-metal to you?

hbb, the same dude who said Coroner debut wasnt thrash and that Protest the Hero are a tech-thrash band is literally the only person on this planet that has ever implied that album has anything to do with nu-metal. Like i said, there is funk(generic as fuck at that) in nu-metal, there is funk in a lot of other genres of music ... that in no way connects them to each other. Imagine implying the funk you hear in some of the tech death bands is the influence of the watered down garbage you hear in nu-metal. Saying that is such a disservice to those bands and even funk and jazz in general.

Obscura has some amazing riffs.

Speaking of Slayer, is their mid period "nu-metal" albums worth checking out?
Diabolus and God Hates Us All are mainly groove+watered down thrash. Although the former does have some nu-metal elements. And no, they are deifntly not worth checking out .. i can linke you to their "best" songs from those albums if you want. Rest of their albums are all thrash .. unless were counting Undisputed Attitude which is mostly punk/hardcore covers.
