spent 8 years and don't miss it. don't know what happened but it really lost it's charm for me. perhaps not enough tall trees and of course the face melting heat.

That right there is the problem. It is a "business" so it doesn't matter how good a band is, just how much they can make for the record company.

Anyone have any tips on how to achieve this kind of tone w/ a 5150?!

how can you get that so clear tone out of a 5150, I mean all we know 5150 has a lot of fizz.
Did you cut a lot from 10khz and above?
Andy that tone is really killer! good job

you can tame the 5150 fizz pretty well by keeping the presence below 5 or so, and running the treble a bit higher...on the red channel especially this gives me a good room sound, but it's usually lacking the presence/clarity i'd want for recording

On both of my 5150's, and even my 5150II, the presence doesn't do anything until 8, at which point it kicks in quite strongly.

When I last used a 5150II I experienced the same thing. Got a brand new 6505 coming this week, so I'll see what the verdict is on that.
