Same, it's really contingent on a lot of varying circumstances when you come down to it.

I think STN sets a good guideline though, I've always somewhat agreed with that. Few people have the money their first album or two to do exactly what they want, not to mention the experience. The most truly representative album of a band's intended style will probably be that sweet spot after experimentation but before despair.

Most bands release their best album within their first 5 years of releasing albums imo. You could cut that down to 3 years and it would probably still hold for roughly half of all cases. Aside from a few personal favorites and weirdo picks where I know most people would pick an earlier album anyways (like Sabbath's Born Again for me), I think it generally holds up. Certainly does for nearly every thrash band and trad metal band of the 80s.
