Next Opeth Album

heavy is a very popular word in this thread, many know Opeth lives a life of its own and can never be controlled. Thats the thing with prog bands, the cause an uproar with the fans but that is only a healthy thing. No one wants a pre constructed idea formatted by the fans, for they are not the art makers, they are only the audience in a movie controlled by the band.

Yeah ! And more pop songs please! Growling sux and all those heavy shits are annoying ! I hope Tiesto will be a guest in the next opeth album hahahha
Come on pleople !!!! Stop this stupid thread !

This thread is dead right now... almost. But you're bringing it back to life, thank you! I just don't really "agree" with people saying that we should not talk about that, because Opeth are the only one to choose what they are going to make. But this is not the point! It's all about expectation, but we all deeply (I hope..) know that we just want them to impress us, like always. Anyway!

Sorry guys ....But what's wrong with my post.Well...what I wanted to say is, that Watershed is so new, dunno what makes u think about the next release ]

same for me, I come across the forum some times and Im surprised how fans are real fans here... I mean, you guys spend so much time speaking of details, it's cool! But Im surprised you guys waiting for the next album, they just started the tour a few months ago. Metallica spent like 8-9 years on tour with the Black album, I hope for you they won't tour all that time. :D

Peace,
Tommy

Euh, no they didn't ... Metallica released black album in 1991 and Load in 1996. They toured about 4 years for the black album, and that was mainly because they lacked inspiration for a new album anyway (lucky for them they had such an immensly popular release to allow them to sit back from writing new material).

Otherwise, agree with your post though ;)

you're right for that one, faux souvenir for the number of years, I just remember it was huge. anyway...

I think it would be interesting if they did something like 2, 30 minute songs, or 4, 20 minute songs. As long as they don't get in the pop music song lengths, like 2 or 3 minute songs.

sounds good. it may seem shallow, but i just dont feel that a song can tell a story and captivate in just 2-3 minutes. the idea of doing a few really long songs would be amazing. albums like Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick and Negura Bunget's 'N Crugu Bradului are great examples. plus, opeth is always doing the opposite of what everyone thinks they'll do, so i say this is right up their alley.

To be honest though, that wouldn't be too unexpected for Opeth. I mean, they have dabbled with 20-minute songs before. And "long songs" in general has always been a part of Opeth.

What I'd like is to have it taken to the extreme, Crimson-style. I have a feeling that by now Mike is mature enough a songwriter to pull it off masterfully. Unfortunately, that would mean "never played live". So I guess I'd prefer the 20-minute option :p

I'd love to see Opeth move around more musically. Not that they're exactly pigeonholed now, but I'd love to see them make more clear moves toward different genres. We've already had a bit of a doom influence in Porcelain Heart (I'm going to point that towards Fredrik's stint with Krux, regardless of truthiness :p). Now how about some Black Metal? Some Neoclassical? Some NWOBHM? Some really jazzy improv-like stuff (think Cynic) And with Axe in there, some pure death metal. Not in the sense of having one song be one genre, but moving through clear segments with different styles.

I guess it might hurt the fact that Opeth has always been about making music "theirs" rather than just repeating others, but I can just see myself gushing over an Opeth Black Metal track.

I don't think any black metal is to come for Opeth.. the nearest thing to black metal they did are the firsts two albums, and I believe Mikael's opinion about these is that they are not.. mature? Well not as much as now. Black metal could mean regression. But who knows? I'd find it very interesting.

I would love to see something like ulver's bergtatt, something with strong northern connections (I'm not saying this because I think northern culture is superior, I just like it) something along the lines with MAYH, but with completely unexpected, wicked elements that can be found in watershed and ghost reveries

good point. however, i wonder why in 2003 he stated that he wanted to make a black metal concept album. he may still hold some of these feelings, we'll just never know...........................

I'd be interested to see an album with just 2 or 3 songs of considerable length, like 3 songs at 15 minutes each, or 2 songs at 20 minutes each. Maybe broken up with one or two smaller interludes. "Black Rose Immortal" is fantastic, I'm sure that after 12 years or so they've developed enough as musicians and songwriters to pull of something of that magnitude for a whole album and make it, at the very least, an interesting listen.
