The Official Movie Thread

i'd like to see your top 10 or 20 TCIs out of interest. theficionado is second for me. personally i have it set so it only counts people with a 16% minimum of films in common, i recommend fiddling with that if you're not impressed with your TCI list.

Boris Godounov (Andrzej Zulawski, 1989) - If Jodorowsky's El Topo is an "acid western" then this qualifies as an "acid opera". Probably second to Zulawski's sci-fi On the Silver Globe in terms of scope and ambition, this is one of Zulawski's most unusual films and that's saying something. Not to sound base, but its really quite mental, featuring amongst other things a man smashing about in a tub of cabbage, a woman having mashed potato's smeared across her face just because, a man cutting off warts on his face and the titular Boris having visions of a murdered child.

Fascinatingly, Zulawski breaks the fourth wall several times with several instances of a camera crew floating by on tracks, numerous sightings of stage lights and even more interesting, the film is bookended with shots of a live audience watching everything unfold on a stage and the orchestra making a few appearances as well.

Being an opera (AND a Zulawski film) it obviously isn't going to be to everyone's taste but the music itself is gorgeous and at times downright hypnotic when coupled with some of the bizarre going's on in the storyline. The sets and costumes are fucking incredible and again are on the same level as On the Silver Globe. Really an outstanding film that any fan of eccentric cinema should seek out.

haha it's mostly oblimax doing the work tbh, but i'm getting back into movies just lately so i'll try to keep updating. going through a vietnam war binge atm, anyone got any recommendations beyond the obvious?

Just finished Howls Moving Castle, weird movie, but pretty good, worth a watch if you like anime. It has Christian Bale and Billy Crystal in some of the voice acting.

great, please keep telling me about cool things happening in a country i can't afford to visit

(srsly though that's cool)

i didn't really care for ROOM. it was never willing to commit to and explore its more provocative ideas, transparently more concerned with jerking as many tears as possible - which might've bothered me less if i believed in it more on a plot level, or even found it appealing aesthetically. *shrug*

Heh, well, if it makes you feel any better the festival was pretty much sold out in a matter of hours.

Have you seen Forced Entry (1973)? Its a thoroughly unpleasant horror porno about an unhinged Vietnam vet. Probably not what your looking for but I figured I'd throw it out there

I thought Room touched on one aspect when she was asked why didnt do something earlier...but that kind of film wont be made for awhile imo

Fucking hell, Shane Carruth has managed to bring together quite a cast for his next project. Hope this isn't a signal of the popularity curse...

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/modern-ocean-anne-hathaway-keanu-836736

Emerging filmmaker Shane Carruth has assembled an impressive cast for his latest movie project, The Modern Ocean.

Anne Hathaway, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe, Chloe Grace Moretz, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Jeff Goldblum and Beasts of No Nation breakout Abraham Attah will star in the ensemble adventure drama, based on Carruth's 200-page script, which is described as being filled with pictures and diagrams.

The storyline revolves around vengeance and the fierce competition for valuable shipping routes and priceless materials that converge in a spectacular battle on the rolling decks of behemoth cargo ships.

"This epic tale, fraught with danger and intrigue, takes us from the ancient trading houses of Algeria to the darkest depths of the ocean floor," said FilmNation in describing the project, which it will introduce to foreign buyers converging this week in Santa Monica for the American Film Market.

that's a pretty nutty cast. i trust carruth to do something interesting with it.

COMBAT SHOCK was amazing btw - i like it more than every canonised 'nam film not named APOCALYPSE NOW, and in a way it feels truer to the subject than any of them. so damn fucked up.

Yeah it's definitely one of my favourites in the Vietnam genre. Right up there with Full Metal Jacket for me.

Looks like this thread is getting good. Combat Shock is great and I second that it's one of the better post-Vietnam films. Man, I haven't heard about Forced Entry in ages. I have to be in the right mood to sit through those types of films but that one has been on my list for ages.
