The Official Movie Thread

lol
i thought the trailer was really cheesy yet the reviews are not bad even die to 6+ points on imdb, i'll still watch it though :D

there's a new russian movie from the director of "Leviathan" Zvyagintsev - called "Loveless". Ones who like dramas with meanings and nice directors work, - must check it out. And Leviathan as well if it's not done yet.

it's so, so bad. i really can't imagine anyone finds anything remotely appealing about it. have you seen wind river? that was a great movie

I just watched the trailer to Wind River and it looks good. That might be a winner for today. On rotten tomaotes The Monster got like a 39% from the audience. I'll pass on that.

Dredging up an old ass comment because I was reading the Who do we think we are thread but; have you seen the other Paul Schrader films in the so-called night workers series?

nope. his new movie is getting hyped to fucking shit by the people in my various feeds though. unexpectedly some kind of amazing masterpiece that channels bergman, tarkovsky and bresson or something lol

Watched Man Bites Dog, which is about a French serial killer who is being followed around documentary style by filmmakers. They sorta get mixed up in his killing spree nonsense too. I really enjoyed this movie. The actor they got to play the serial killer was really good at being such a pretentious pseudo-intellectual douche. It sorta reminds me of American Pyscho.

Edit: yesterday I was a couch potato and didn't leave my house but I'm hoping to see wind river today

A longtime favorite. Its actually blackly hilarious in a lot of spots. When he shoots the guy at his birthday party then sits down and continues eating like nothing happened, so great. Really ahead of its time in a lot of ways. Curious to get your take, I've read a lot of critiques saying that the crews behavior during the home invasion was implausible which I've always thought to be strange. I mean, just look at the subject of their project. What's so hard to believe that after filming everything Ben has done they wouldn't cross some sort of "professional" (for lack of a better word) line at some point along the way?

Just finished watching Casino.

I had planned to put it on while I did some writing and ended up doing no writing, eyes glued to the screen.

Casino does that. Peekaboo, you fucks you.
I think I've said it before in this very thread but back when Casino first came out on video it was back when they had to split the film up on two tapes because it was so long, I pretty much wore out the second tape because it starts right at the scene where Pesci tells the guy how he's going to crack his fuckin skull open in front of everybody in the bank. Man, I love that scene. It just proves that Pesci didn't have to be a ranting raving lunatic to be menacing, though he's brilliant when he goes to that place as well.

Casino is basically perfect. Even the voiceovers just discussing the inner workings of the casino's are fascinating.

@Oblivious Maximus: It's definitely satire for sure. And a lot of ways is a nod to absurdist and Dadaist . The crews behavior was kind of interesting actually. I didn't expect them to go along with it but I also figured in the realm of this type of film it works. It's not supposed to be an entirely truthful film. It's grossly exaggerated and absurd. I mean that scene where he kills the black guy, he's so blatantly racist and even unzips the guys pants to find out if the rumor is true. And then is disgusted by it.

But I guess in some ways maybe this movie is sorta making a comment about violence. Like many times we see it, do not step in against it, and depending on the situation might even participate in it too. That whole "flock mentality" thing. Or even what people would do just because they are being filmed even. I mean that movie was made in the 90s where reality tv started to take shape, so it wouldn't surprise me that it's a nod to documentaries/reality shows like "Cops" where it gets its viewer right in the middle of some crazy shit.

Also, I saw Wind River last night and yes @rms thay movie was amazing. Very well done character development too. It was a lot heavier than I anticipated though, sorta left the theater on complete disgust but I do love when I get riled up about a movie. Thanks for the recommendation!

Its also worth noting that the title "Man Bites Dog" is a journalistic phrase referring to outlandish news getting more coverage than "normal" news.

Batman Returns is excellent. There's a great downbeat feeling to the whole thing (the opening is especially great), and a very gothic atmosphere and production design. It also benefits greatly from its cast. Danny DeVito was a perfect Penguin but Michelle Pfeiffer has always been the crown jewel of that film. After her, no other Catwoman can compare.

Interesting. I plan to rewatch both very soon to see if my negative feelings towards them from years ago are still there. I've never been able to really explain why they didn't gel with me, specifically the first one.

But a good friend of mine is obsessed with them and always bugs me about it. Batman Returns I don't remember too well but I definitely remember not enjoying the first one that much.

Do you prefer Batman Returns to it btw?
