The Brutal Hopelessness of Love (Takashi Ishii, 2007) - Revisited this for the first time in a few years yesterday for some Christmas cheer. Still one of the greatest films of the past 20 years and Ishii has been responsible for a handful of those. One of the most clever uses of film within a film revolving around an actress being interviewed, it's and erotic, fetishistic, at times blackly humorous, ultimately tragic character study of a seriously wounded psyche. The ending will rip your fucking guts out. Hopefully leading lady Mai Kitajima is doing well these days, there was a case of life imitating art some time after the film came out that oddly resembled some of the plot. Slick as all hell, too. Other modern films wish they had Ishii's style. He even slyly finds ways to work around the genital blurring using light and lens flair or a lot of times saying fuck it and doesn't even bother to hide anything.
