The Official Movie Thread

the above is all i’ve seen.

guess i should mention chinatown ‘cause he rules in that!

Also rules in The Other Side of the Wind, playing a semi-autobiographical role that's basically 50% Huston, 50% Welles.

I second your recs for Key Largo, The Asphalt Jungle and The Misfits. I do love The Maltese Falcon though I don't really see it as a purebred noir. It has a sense of whimsy, whipcrack dialogue and pacing more reminiscent of the classic screwball comedies of the era.

oh yeah, forgot about that!

and yeah i think that's a fair way of looking at it. it's a very silly movie and probably more fun if you don't go into it expecting double indemnity.

i'm glad you liked the misfits. i thought you might find it too melodramatic, i think a lot of people do. monroe's performance is very over the top but in a way i really love, i think because that excessiveness seems fundamental to her whole character, overcompensating for a hole inside her that i suspect was mirrored in marilyn herself. and of course the impending deaths of everyone in the main cast gives all of these performances an extra layer of tragedy anyway.

cover-ms.-45.jpg I watched Red Heat for the first time earlier. What a movie! Hilarious dialogue and great action. Ed O'Ross was deliciously over the top as the bad guy, plus great to see some other familiar faces. Walter Hill is slowly becoming a fav director of mine.

Capped off the night with Ringo Lam's In Hell. First time watch for me on this as well. The movie, although flawed in places is pretty deep and has some very brutal scenes. I can see myself watching this again and enjoying it even more. Again, plenty of familiar faces in this and it also has the hilarious situation of having Carlos Gomez portraying a Russian guard.

Finally Watched Abel Ferrara's 1981 rape revenge film Ms .45. I snagged the Drafthouse Films release on blu ray which is the uncut version. Although this type of story on celluloid was not unique at the time, Ferrara's effort is still very powerful and disturbing. Zoe Lund is utterly hypnotic as the titular character. The violence is brutal and realistic and the rape scenes are incredibly sleazy and nasty. The score of the film did make it feel like a porno, but then Ferrara directed a pornographic film for his debut.

Anya Taylor-Joy Reuniting With 'The Witch' Director Robert Eggers on 'Nosferatu' Remake.
While it is not known what role Taylor-Joy will play in the reworking — or who else will be joining her — Eggers’ version of the horror classic has been a long time coming. First announced in 2015, just after the premiere of The Witch at Sundance Film Festival, the project has been in the works for upwards of six years, with a stop in the middle for Eggers to shoot The Lighthouse, the eerie black and white thriller starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, as well as The Northman starring Nicole Kidman, Dafoe, Taylor-Joy, and Alexander Skarsgård, which is currently in post-production.

She's also playing Furiosa in the upcoming Fury Road prequel, I'm interested to see how she manages that. She doesn't particularly give off young Furiosa vibes to me.

I haven't really seen enough of her to give an opinion, but considering the epic nature of Mad Max: Fury Road and how it was just frigging amazing, I am optimistic that Furiosa and the direct sequel to Fury Road will be the same.

I’m psyched for The Northman. There needs to be more Viking age/medieval horror a la The 13th Warrior and Black Death.

Amen to that shit. Have you seen Valhalla Rising? It's not quite horror but still, awesome movie.

I suppose she fits considering we'll probably be seeing Furiosa go from a relatively normal feminine young woman into the hardened character from Fury Road.

I cannot believe I've slept on the film Ironclad. What a ride! Seriously violent medieval drama. Great fight sequences with a great mixture of CGI and practical effects. James Purefoy broods away as a Templar Knight and Paul Giamatti hams it up (in a good way) as King John. Supporting cast are strong. There are good moments of introspection, especially with King John that add depth to the plot.

Pretty impressive debut right here. The director Mark Toia is an Australian who has been making advertisements for like 20 years and recently decided to try his hand at film. He and his wife bankrolled this whole thing with their own money apparently which is surprising because the CGI doesn't feel like it.

Looking around I'm seeing people describe it as "RoboCop meets Predator" which isn't too far off or anything but personally I'd go with something more accurate (and less hype/complimentary) like CHAPPiE meets Rambo 2, with a pinch of Rambo 4 and The Terminator franchise. The cast gets put through a gauntlet. It's violent as shit, the robots are animated with some class, the acting isn't too awful for a bunch of mostly nobodies (the director could afford one "star" and he chose Neal McDonough) and there is some cool use of old school gore effects which was a nice touch.

Definitely recommend for anybody who likes a nice simplistic action/sci-fi/survival shoot 'em up, which is a rare thing for a 2020 movie.

Finally got around to checking this out....fast paced , violent flick. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Best part/character was the military guy who was watching over the tech people....badass ruthless mofo.

Love Valhalla Rising. Weird fucking movie, but really good.

Try The Head Hunter. Very micro budgeted movie, but very well done. Think you'd find something to like about it based on the other films you've mentioned.

I've been thinking about this and you're right. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of medieval horror. But it's out there, you just have to do some digging. A lot of the movies I'm thinking of are only partially set in medieval times or not even straight horror flicks but they capture a lot of the same stylings or atmosphere.

So first one that pops in my head is the The Church (1989) aka La Chiesa.

Only the beginning of the film, like maybe the first 10 minutes is set in medieval times, but it sets the tone and leaves an impression.

In medieval Germany, a band of Teutonic Knights massacre a village of supposed devil-worshippers and bury their bodies underground, building a gothic cathedral over the mass grave as a means to contain the demonic evil within.

Hundreds of years later a young librarian unleashes the evil within, by removing a rock in the catacombs . Series of events occur meanwhile, everybody just does not seem to be the same. Father Gus is the only one not possessed, he must save the city from becoming a pandemonium, he must find the ancient secret of the church so it can crumble to pieces......

This was directed by Michael Sovai and it's an Italian made film. So that just means it's batshit crazy. Most of its almost nonsensical, but it's more of a psychological horror film made up of heavy atmosphere and location, and nightmare imagery.

Feels medieval throughout because of the gothic church setting. So that's why I'd recommend it. Have a bunch more but already typed more than I wanted to, plus I'm on a touch screen:err:
