The "What Are You Doing This Moment" Thread

Im definitely behind on this kind of stuff, but had no clue that facebook had "trackers" that follow you to other sites and collect info(even when you're not logged on!). I guess firefox just got an update because for the first time i got a notification that i was being tracked and and it was automatically blocked :kickass:

The Facebook virus is one of the worst out there, but it's not really any different to Google virus.

Same shit different smell. All the big sites track users, they all do it in similar ways but essentially the same thing. They are looking for your browsing history, finding out where you go and what you look at. They claim it's to make searching better and quicker but the truth is they do it because having data on everyone benefits them.

It's not that they care who they are tracking. Sure some of these companies take your name, or whatever details you give on email addresses etc but they don't really care about who you are, they care about what you look at. It helps them target advertising, it helps them target the sites you see in search results. It can be used to find out other details but in general the likes of Google and FB aren't hunting you down for your name and address, they want to know what ad to present you with next, or what site should be number 1 in or search results. But that doesn't mean other sites aren't more sinsiter. Porn sites, torrent sites, VPN sites are all capable of collecting more from your computer than Google and FB do, but again they generally aren't looking for your name and address they are looking to see your viewing habits.

Also don't forget that when you buy something from Amazon, or anywhere else your password and username might be somewhat protected, although not hard to get, but you've also keyed in your mailing address. At the same time you've searched Google maps for something in your area. Then you looked up cinema times at the local cinema. All that data is on your computer and trackers, especially dishonest ones, can use that information.

Even without that your IP is recorded and from that you are traceable down to your house address, or very close too it for someone with a little ability.

Realistically it doesn't matter, if someone who knows what they are doing wants you they can find you. If they want your data its not hard to get. Google and the like don't want you, they want to know how they can use you to make them more money

Not really true, yes they do a lot of this to maximise profit, but they also get involved with military contracting and government projects, for example Project Maven. Make no mistake, they will sell all your information to entities that don't just want to learn how to best get your money.

Details make the money sure but the likes of Google and FB aren't selling anything you don't provide them with. Whereas other less reputable sites actually can and do take information you don't necessarily provide them.

A lot of people "who knew what they were doing" have tried(just ask Jonathon McChinster), but to no avail. None of my personal info is out there. I rarely use my full name and info anywhere, including amazon. Yea they might have one of my addresses, but so does the mailman, the UPS driver, the store down the street etc. So unless they're bringing me something that i need them to bring me, there's a good chance a wadcutter will be the only thing they find.

Marking mock exam papers for my class and one of the questions is about making a criticism of some working that is shown but is wrong. And one student has responded with “I don’t want to as I don’t like criticising people.”

That sounds like the story that has been doing the rounds for years where the young girl was asked on a math test to calculate how much a girl weighs based on the data given and her supposed response was that it was rude to weight shame a person and therefore she refused to answer the question.

Breakfast. I'm eating corn flakes and big news, I started drinking my blakk tea with honey. Should help with my random hypoglycemic episodes.
