Themed Mixtape Game Mk. 2

Celtic Frost-Into the Crypts of Rays - 7
fine but vanilla

Valhalla-Nightstalker - 6
sounds 100 years old

Impact-Knowledge is King - 7
not bad but it's obscure for a reason

Cranium-Dentist of Death - 5
points for the bottle in the asshole lol

Target-Absolution by Termination - 7
cool riffs vocals cringy at times

Sigh-In the Mind of a Lunatic - 8
weird but interesting i like it

Blessed Sickness-The Butcher - 5
good thing it's short

Iced Earth-Jack - 10
chonky guitar tone and the manliest clean vocals in metal

Mortillery-Sunday Morning Slasher - 9
holy shit who the fuck are these guys

Torture Killer-Sewers - 9
whoa this is badass

Hellwell-To Serve Man - 8
saw the length and naturally opened a new tab for anal porn and surprisingly the song was decent background music for whacking off

Night Demon-Killer - 7
nothing wrong with it

Judas Priest-The Ripper - 5
not one of their better songs

Gorerotted-To Catch a Killer(A Serial Sing-A-Long) - 7
fairly entertaining

Celtic Frost-Into the Crypts of Rays

Early Frost is the best Frost. I love how Tom G sings the line “Gilles de Rais, perverted son”, almost with a tone of reverence. Fucking badass. 9/10 for the music, +1 for being about a real serial killer. 10/10

Valhalla-Nightstalker

Some good riffs here. I could forgive the drums and bass being washed out in the mix but combine that with the vocals and it all sounds a bit too nice. Lyrically it’s rather nondescript too, as far as serial killer themes go. 6/10

Impact-Knowledge is King

Vocalist reminds me a lot of Tom Araya. It’s OK but the noticeable crossover element isn’t my thing. 6/10

Cranium-Dentist of Death

Found the vocals offputting initially, but I have to admit it did grow on me. How the fuck did this get Burkhard’s seal of approval?! 7/10

Target-Absolution by Termination

I’m not sure whether to reward the submitter for making a clever statement about the state as a serial killer, or to punish for being off-theme. But musically it’s pretty bland so 5/10

Sigh-In the Mind of a Lunatic

Love me some Sigh. Riff-wise this is a bit of a mixed bag. The psychadelic chorus is cool. +1 for at least being about a real serial killer, even if it is the most commonly referenced one in metal. 7.5/10

Blessed Sickness-The Butcher

Absolutely filthy sound. Didn’t really develop enough but at least it didn’t overstay its welcome. 7/10

Iced Earth-Jack

I truly don’t get what people see in Iced Earth and this does nothing to change my mind. Comes perilously close to being nu-metal. +1 for at least being about a real serial killer, even if it is the most commonly referenced one in metal. 4/10

Mortillery-Sunday Morning Slasher

Generic and polished to oblivion; the kind of modern thrash I have zero interest in. 4/10

Torture Killer-Sewers

Another one that isn’t my kind of thing, have to admit that opening wall of sound riff is killer though. 6.5/10

Hellwell-To Serve Man

Sounds decrepit and gothic like a theme to some old Vincent Price movie. Blazing solo at the back end. Is it just me, or does the cover art make it look like the guy on the throne is getting a golden shower? 8/10

Night Demon-Killer

“Killer! Killing just for fun. Killer! Killing everyone.” That says it all as to how absolutely middle of the road this is. 4/10

Judas Priest-The Ripper

Well that was obvious as all hell. 6.5/10

Gorerotted-To Catch a Killer(A Serial Sing-A-Long)

The tag team vocals might work if the riffs weren’t so dull. 4/10

Celtic Frost - Into the Crypts of Rays - God be damned l need more CF in my life. Primitive perfection. That bass drum sound.. the lead.. Tom.. and the riffs! 10/10 On my second beer cause l listened to it 4 times.

Valhalla - Nightstalker - Ah yeah listen to the bass while that tasty geetar goes around in circles. Love the keyboard stuff too. The guy has a pleasing yet delicate/weak/feeble/lazy/ throat made for true heavy metal. Great stuff! Killer leads! 9/10

Impact - Knowledge is King - 91 huh? Would not have guessed that from the intro, but that's cause l just smoked my first joint and my ears just aren't what they used t - ohshut up man. Someone said Araya vocals? oh yeah. Some wicked instrumentation here but that's cause it's fucking Darren Abad playing geetar guys. Darren fuckin Abad. No? Nope me neither. Killer shit. Ended just as l was about to do an Arg with anal. But without the porn. Love the speed riffs! 8/10 3rd beer

Cranium - Dentist of Death - Wow that's an instant 10/10 because it has everything l want in a speed metal song. I'm not about to tell you what that is but it's all here man. Cranium you have a friend for life. Gene Hoglan assistant engineer er? Grave Raper is the singer. Grave Raper. Oh shit only released on CD. Holy fuck this is the best mix tape game ever. Cheapest for sale is from some bum in Sweden! I don't trust those fucking assholes Jesus that bit from 0.33 - 0.45 is just perfection. and then a bit later 'Open your mouth idiot!' This is GENIUS!! Oh yeah this is right up my alley. Started my 5th beer on this cause that was 7 listens. cheers to the wonderful soul that subbed this :headbang::kickass::headbang::kickass::headbang::kickass::headbang:

Target - Absolution by Termination - As l had thought might happen, after an immediate and massive come down from the erb, this fails to continue on with my best PL ever thing. Sorry guys. Target are a very respectable young band from Dunstable who will no doubt continue to break new ground in the New Year. All going well. Well, maybe. 'Probably the very best tech thrash has to offer' says some pollock on YT. Not quite mate. This is fine. It's non-threatening, kinda dull plodding tech-thrash-metal l would prolly invite the guys over to meet me ma and be done with them. 6/10

Sigh - In the Mind of a Lunatic - I though Sigh was a brutal Japanese BM band. I had not heard their music before this and it's kinda good. Kinda wtf. Oh they are the same band? I would have been gutted buying this way back when thinking l was getting a ferocious BM onslaught. But I'm older now. This is not something I'd search but it's cool. They do that ayyaa-aaayyyaaa thing which sucks of course 7/10 Typical BM vox is bland but the music is interesting enough and sweet female background vox too.

Blessed Sickness - The Butcher - These guys are such a mix of several established DM bands.. it's really difficult trying to roll another spliff, type, drink and listen at the same time whilst collecting my thoughts about another fantastic piece of notes that is over in less than 2 minutes.. this slays.. weird production but l dig. 8/10

Iced Earth - Jack - This band never did anything whatsoeveratall for me. Back when this came out these guys seemed to be watered down Metallica, Testament etc even tho they were more extreme. 3rd joint Coming from Melbourne tho, we didn't really hear much. Well, It's pretty fucking stale. Really boring repeating riffs and that's it! 4/10

Mortillery - Sunday Morning Slasher - Yeah bouncy chugging thrash! I passed on buying this several months ago and maybe should revisit that purchase.. these guys tend to sit on that Violator Municipal Waste bucket, love it. 8/10

Torture Killer - Sewers - AAAGGHHHH ya burying the vox man. This rules! I am a simple DM loving creature and these guys peaked my ears for that great tone, evil vox and - take away the slightly pedestrian main riff - tremolo madness. Wine next 9/10 Just wish they'd deleted the intro voice over!

Hellwell - To Serve Man - 30 secs in.. Oh this sounds gorgeous! After the last few tracks we would be remiss not to reintroduce the best mix tape game ever again! Omg this is fuckin awesome Hellwell what the fuck??? Thematic (oh yeah we have a theme) but l mean musically, Hellwell you fucking beast! Must explore these guys more, ah see how these guys are linked to MR. Mr Shelton ftw Godly! 10/10 OOOHHH this is great, all you fuckers moaning about how long it is.. 1/10, but my score this evening is a perfect 10!

Night Demon - Killer - Some promises of shred in the intro. But no Night Demon, l can see right through you. These guys wanted to be huge. But they didn't have it. They could only hold hands. Not willies 3/10 Killer tone but little substance destroyed ND from much more than a minor following on the outskirts of Rock City. They had looks, money and torn jeans. You were their bitch. But they kinda sucked

Judas Priest - The Ripper - This cheeky video didn't want to represent here. What a cunt. But me being a total sleuth I found it er? (I think) About to pop the cork. Of course, one of the greatest from one of the greatest. If you don't admire it it's you. 10/10

Gorerotted - To Catch a Killer(A Serial Sing-A-Long) - John, Jack, Jeff, Ted, Fred and John George. Omg what a blast! 10/10

Celtic Frost - Into the Crypts of Rays 9.5/10
About as classic as it gets.

Valhalla - Nightstalker 8.5/10
Fucking love this EP with its raw 70's Priest worship. Used to have it on tape and jammed it all the time at work. They also did a promo video for the title track:

Impact - Knowledge is King 8/10
That was pretty cool. No bullshit thrash devastation.

Cranium - Dentist of Death 7.5/10
What the fuck? This is so random. Doesn't sound like late 90's thrash at all, but also doesn't necessarily sound 80's. What a fucking weird voice on the singer too. Truly an obscurity.

Target - Absolution by Termination 5/10
._.

Sigh - In the Mind of a Lunatic 7/10
It sounds like someone smashed 90's girl-pop, black metal and Motörhead together and then jammed a loose cover of "Enter Sandman." Not sure if that's even a good thing either, but it was fun.

Blessed Sickness - The Butcher 9/10
Dual vocals like this kills everything! I've seen this band posted around death metal groups I'm in but don't think I've ever heard them. Fucking insane.

Iced Earth - Jack 6/10
Sounds like it should be on a Crusty Demons soundtrack. Grew on me a bit by the end, but I've always had trouble with Matt Barlow.

Mortillery - Sunday Morning Slasher 7.5/10
Production is a bit fucked for my tastes (drums and bass got cucked), but damn these riffs go right for the face!

Torture Killer - Sewers 6.5/10
Super meat & potatoes death metal right here. I remember buying this back in '09 and feeling like it was the least dynamic thing I'd ever heard. It's not bad by any means, but it's so not memorable lmao. I have respect for Jari Laine though, his bass and guitar playing on Pure Blood Doom was sick!

Hellwell - To Serve Man 9/10
Such a great atmospheric beast of a tune. I wonder which sadistic fuckwit submitted it though...

Night Demon - Killer 6/10
Back when I still drank I enjoyed this band a lot. Still sounds fun, but also very... generic? Sounds harsher than I mean it. Second album was slightly better.

Judas Priest - The Ripper 7/10
Probably my least favourite track off Sad Wings of Destiny, and in general these slower chuggier type Priest tunes rarely blow me away, but at the end of the day even Sad Wings at its lowest is still fucking great.

Gorerotted - To Catch a Killer (a Serial Sing-a-Long) 7.5/10
Hell yeah a deathgrind album I haven't heard in ages. Killer band. Makes me nostalgic for the mid-2000's.

i’m a bit surprised how harsh people are being on the night demon, maybe it’s ‘cause i really dive into the bowels of new trad metal pretty regularly but there’s tons of stuff more superficial and soulless than that. they’re obviously totally minor but pretty classy and catchy imo, i genuinely really like a couple of their tunes (not that one admittedly).

I'm seeing a lot more high ratings for Hellwell than length-motivated low ratings (I only count the one.) Might actually be in the running for first lol

Celtic Frost - Into the Crypts of Rays

Had no idea this was about Gilles de Reis, pretty cool. Classic Frost, not much else to say 8.5/10

Valhalla - Nightstalker

Love the production, actually sounds ancient and arcane and all that shit 8/10

Impact - Knowledge is King

Maybe a little weak in the songwriting department, forgivable when it thrashes this hard though. Some killer riffs too 8/10

Cranium - Dentist of Death

Even on their more straightforward black/thrash debut EP these guys had enough riffs for a lifetime, but I like that they leaned more into this deranged, manic sound on their full lengths. Judging by the ratings this stuff is way too underheard 9/10

Target - Absolution By Termination

Sort of on the fence about this. Certain sections are cool but a lot of it goes absolutely nowhere. The state being the serial killer is flimsy as fuck btw 6.5/10

Sigh - In the Mind of a Lunatic

Has the sound of something that could potentially grow on me... oh wait this brief bit with female vocals isn't good. Mercifully short? Nah it's back. Fuck it 4/10

Blessed Sickness - The Butcher

Ultra rotten and repulsive sound - much appreciated. I hoped for more shit like this for this theme 8/10

Iced Earth - Jack

I naively thought after the little clean section halfway through they might come back with something more interesting but nah... more generic chugging 3/10

Mortillery - Sunday Morning Slasher

Chile has ruined modern thrash for me 6/10

Torture Killer - Sewers

Middle of the road 5/10

Hellwell - To Serve Man

hah I didn't even know Hellwell put out a second album. Didn't get into the first one, mostly due to the fucking organ... and there's an organ solo. Yeah I'd take anything by Manilla Road over this any day 4/10

Night Demon - Killer

Obviously fairly standard stuff here but it isn't without charm 6.5/10

Judas Priest - The Ripper

7/10

Gorerotted - To Catch a Killer (A Serial-Sing-A-Long)

Not bad, not really my kind of death metal 6/10
