Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mark 7/10 I've seen these guys mentioned here on the forum before, recall checking them out and not my thing. But this track wasn't bad. Kind of catchy chorus going on.

Currents - The Death We Seek 2/10 not for me

Motorhead - Sweet Revenge 9.5/10 great track, great album, great band

Solicitor - Betrayer 8/10 this is pretty good, never heard of em.....will investigate further

Genetic Wisdom - Psycho Love 8.5/10 haunting and psychotic....dig it

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot Out the Dead 7.5/10 gave this one multiple listens...was going to rate it lower but it's pretty good..like it. Another band I'll probably check out more from

Acheron - Betrayed 6/10 not really a fan, didn't hate it, just not my thing

Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference# 6/10 see above

Rainbow - Kill the King 8.5/10

Bride - Out For Blood 7.5/10 sounds like something off a soundtrack to some bottom shelf 80's horror movie....i usually like those kind of movies and the soundtracks.

My brain is a piece of shit today, lazier than usual ratings incoming

Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mask

Not bad. I actually got into Madder Mortem's debut a couple of years ago. Only thing I really like here is the vocals and cleaner sections 6/10

Currents - The Death We Seek

the death you deserve

giphy.gif

2/10

Motörhead - Sweet Revenge 6/10

Solicitor - Betrayer

Far from original but the spirit's there 8/10

Genetic Wisdom - Psycho Love 5/10

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot out the Dead

Repeat pick? Feel like I've heard this before multiple times. Even Scalzi's involvement doesn't interest me much 6/10

Acheron - Betrayed (A Broken Pact) 5/10

Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference

The kind of album half the NZ metal scene wishes they could produce. I even recall an interloper taking over the stereo at a New Year's party a decade ago and playing a full album by these guys. Not for me, anyway 5/10

Rainbow - Kill the King 8/10

Bride - Out for Blood 4/10

Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mark 5.5/10

Not bad, somewhat unconvinced by the vocals though.

Currents - The Death We Seek 0.5/10
The Dick We Suck.

Motörhead - Sweet Revenge 8/10
Obv pick is obv but I can't say shit because I submitted Bathory last round lol. Anyways a fucking sick slow burner by Lemmy & The Heads. What's not to love?

Solicitor - Betrayer 8/10
Definitely heard these guys before, but I've kinda fallen out with trad metal in the COVID-era. Dunno why, but this is why these games rule. This shit was gold. High energy heavy metal!

Genetic Wisdom - Psycho Love 7.5/10
That was pretty epic! Never heard of these guys before. The vibe lined up perfectly with a GTA 5 flying mission I was just doing lol. Gotta look into them.

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot Out the Dead 9/10
Probably my favourite H.O.M. album, lots of nostalgia here.

Acheron - Betrayed 8.5/10
I love all the tempo changes and the super decipherable vocals. Great solos too.

Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference 9/10
9 minutes of relentless and utter annihilation. One of the few interesting "war metal" bands out there. Just listen to that frantic bass playing!

Rainbow - Kill the King 8.5/10
Unexpected but not unwelcome! This album is glorious, top to bottom.

Bride - Out for Blood 8/10
Judas Bride? Holy shit. The vocalist is so balls-to-the-wall that I actually laughed out loud at times. This was incredible.

Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mark
This is pretty badass, intense and atmospheric stuff. Just wish the music was as evocative as the vocals, enough with the chugging please! Props to sirjack for starting the playlist with an obvious album closer, complete with dead silence at the end and everything.
8.5/10

Currents - The Death We Seek

Even in a contest of betrayal, you can always count on arg.
0/10

Motörhead - Sweet Revenge

Truly, when I saw the theme announced, the very first thing that came to mind was "Sweet Revenge" by Motörhead. It's like "Fade to Black" is to suicide or Saint Vitus to alcoholism.

I have a hard time picturing anyone thinking of this song at all. I'm never annoyed to hear Lemmy, but this is pretty forgettable, and the connection to the theme is... technically there, but tenuous. What was the betrayal? Who knows, but at least it's being avenged, so that's nice.
5/10

Sölicitör - Betrayer

Competent, but not terribly memorable.
6.5/10

Genetic Wisdom - Psycho Love

What is this, obscure off-kilter prog/thrash? Has HamburgerBoy returned to us? Nah, he's shitting on this album in the RYM shoutbox so I guess we'll have to fuck our own damn pillows. This seems... emotive and idiosyncratic, but also kind of amateurish and lethargic. You can practically hear the drummer throw in some syncopated snare hits out of sheer boredom. Lol this transition at 8:10 is deranged. OK it's got some positives, I'll be charitable.
7/10

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot Out the Dead

Makes me wish there was more good political metal out there, Scalzi sounds fucking acerbic on this. Love the lyrics, probably a poisoned letter to the Bush administration but generalized enough to be relevant in any time or place. Drummer drums the shit out of this too. Man, this era of Hammers was such a perfect storm of amazing musicianship, and it's a testament to Cobbett's songwriting that they remained a good band even after Scalzi, Myers and Chewy left.
9.5/10

Acheron - Betrayed (A Broken Pact)

There's something that makes a lot of death doom metal sound samey that this avoids. Maybe it's that it's playing it closer to Autopsy than all the gothic-influenced stuff. Uptempo section is killer too, and the growls are sick. This band seems to be known more for its association with the Church of Satan than their music but if this song is any indication - they should be known for their music. This owns.
9/10

Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference

My favorite part of this song is the lyrics, but I think I'd get more out of just reading the lyrics than actually listening to the music. I don't get why they have to be conveyed through "war metal", or why "war metal" is a thing really.
4/10

Rainbow - Kill the King

Amazing song obviously. Is treason betrayal, though? We do not choose the countries we are born into, so what moral obligation do we have to not behead our rulers?
8/10

Bride - Out for Blood

The verses in this are fucking amazing, would be perfect if it didn't settle into that meatheaded glam rock riff for the chorus.
8.5/10

Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mark
i've never really delved into them, but this is pretty much what i remember them sounding like from the time i saw them supporting opeth back in 2003. i like the idea of some densely layered off-kilter proggy goth-doom with eerie basslines and a powerhouse voice slipping in and out of the cracks, but i find the execution of that vibe pretty heavy-handed, feels too much like a pop-metal band trying to be weird at times, which is kinda what you'd expect given the bands they rub shoulders with. not to mention the chugging, like they've been listening to too much lacuna coil or something. still better and more original than the majority of stuff from this scene though. 6.5/10

Currents - The Death We Seek

2/10

Motorhead - Sweet Revenge

solid but not as good as Alexandra's Project. 5/10

Solicitor - Betrayer

verses here are great and it's hard not to get swept up in the solos. makes up for its shortcomings in ambition with sheer spirit. does get a little bogged down in the slower sections. 7.5/10

Genetic Wisdom - Psycho Love

if the vocals were less dreary and the songwriting was more dynamic i could see me slapping at least a 9 on this. love the weird solo when it eventually arrives, but they should've been doing that around the 4-5 minute mark and then exploding into life and it never really happens. still probably my favourite song so far though. for all their fame it's remarkable how few bands actually successfully built on metallica's more abnormal stuff, which this sort of does. 7.5/10

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot Out the Dead

better than most slough feg in my book. 9/10

Acheron - Betrayed

i'm only familiar with '90s acheron courtesy of their being ANUS darlings, and i'm glad to see they finally ditched their stupid fucking schtick of having interludes between every single song. i'm a sucker for these kinds of dry snare-heavy production jobs, and unlike genetic wisdom this song actually develops properly and feels like an epic. the part at 6.25 onward is so damn good. 8.5/10

Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference

this band are a hyper technical and melodic maelstrom which overwhelms musically and captivates lyrically. to me they're pretty far removed from the war metal scene (at least here or on 'purify', which is a great EP people should check out if they find this one too much of a homogenous wall of sound) and have more in common with weirdo tech-melo DM bands like crimson massacre or molested, although they're better than either. this isn't really one of their best songs but still has the usual fucking insane drumming, the incredibly creative basslines and riffage. sacramentary abolishment, blood revolt, weapon... everything these guys touch turns to gold. 9/10

Rainbow - Kill the King

probably my third favourite rainbow song after 'gates of babylon' and 'stargazer', outstanding. 8.5/10

Bride - Out For Blood

what can i say man, sounds like a cut off 'defenders of the faith' (not one of the hideous ones) and i've been a slut for that shit for 20+ years. 7/10

Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mark
I love the changes within this song and I love the sound of the heavy guitar parts, my favourite being the one from 7:06 to 7:38. In addition to this, their singer has one of the most powerful clean female voices in metal. They don't sound like any other band I know. Even though this song doesn't feature any guitar solos, it's not like I miss them here. I don't know why they had to put a minute of silence at the end followed by a soft instrumental outro, though. Seems a bit weird, but since it doesn't sound to me like the song is imcomplete when you stop it at 8:56, this won't affect my rating. 10/10

Currents - The Death We Seek
Not to be found on M.A. - must be Metal- or Deathcore then. While the clean vocals and some parts of the music are still bearable, there's too much which simply grates on my nerves. 2.5/10

Motorhead - Sweet Revenge
Pretty average and very repetitive song. Boring. 5/10

Solicitor - Betrayer
Sounds quite Helloween-ish. Doesn't come anywhere close to my favourite Helloween-songs, but still good. I like the guitar work. 7.5/10

Genetic Wisdom - Psycho Love
As regards the music, this is one of my favourite songs in this round. Too bad that the vocals are off-key more than once, therefore only 7.5/10

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot Out the Dead
Overall an quite enjoyable song. 8/10

Acheron - Betrayed
Vocalist reminds me a bit of Chuck Schuldiner. The song itself isn't bad, either, with some decent guitar work. 7.5/10

Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference
The nearly constant blast beats remind me of "Ernie and Bert go BRUTAL" - only that this piece here lasts about four times as long and doesn't feature Ernie and Bert, which to me was the only entertaining factor of the former clip. The vocals are of my least favourite kind. The only entertaining part of this song for me is the line "The Germans have established a system of interstellar travel" (which I wouldn't have discovered, if I hadn't read the lyrics on M.A). 1/10

Rainbow - Kill the King
The first version of this song I heard was the cover by Liege Lord. Not exactly the type of metal I usually listen to, but I can appreciate it. 7.5/10

Bride - Out For Blood
The title first had me wondering if this could be a cover of Lita Ford's song with the same title, but submitting a cover version in this game would seem a bit weird. The vocalist has a very powerful voice, which I really like, but I find the song itself rather stale. Because of the vocals: 6/10

Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mark

Started in promising fashion and the rhythm section is really good but the guitarist really doesn’t have the creativity to back up the band’s ambitions. The vocalist is merely passable. 6/10

Currents - The Death We Seek

The best thing I can say about this is it isn’t the worst song on the playlist. 2/10

Motorhead - Sweet Revenge

I like the groove here, but somehow the one-dimensional-ness of this bothers me more here than on Motorhead’s faster tracks. 7/10

Sölicitör - Betrayer

With a band name like Sölicitör (complete with umlauts) how could I not love it. Luckily the music is actually good. 8/10

Genetic Wisdom - Psycho Love

Had to fight the overwhelming urge to skip this after 4mins of off-key dreariness (complete with shitty drum tone). Somehow the backing vocals are even worse than the lead vocals (check out the mooing around 6:40). At last arg’s tracks have the decency to be short. 1/10

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot Out the Dead

I like the Hammers in high energy mode like this. I guess that’s why I prefer Slough Feg in general. I’ve never been a big fan of the female vocals but they work well enough here. Not very thematic. 7.5/10

Acheron - Betrayed

The doomy section was the least interesting part of this song, but once it gets going it’s quality. So many ideas crammed in, yet the transitions are handled impeccably. Vicious, but not afraid to use melody and it works well. 9/10

Axis of Advance - Curtailing Factors of Interference

More amazing drumming, and brilliant basswork to boot. I love manic shit like this - sounds like Trails of Anguish in parts. I could do with some more variation in tempo and an easing up of the relentless blasting, particularly on a 9 minute track. Vocals are unintellible so I’ll just assume it’s on topic. 8/10

Rainbow - Kill the King

Great musicians at their peak. Blackmore’s playing is so deft and Dio knocks it out of the park as always. Little things elevate this too, eg the key change, and THAT ending. 9/10

Bride - Out For Blood

As far as Priest worship goes, this is decent. Another track of dubious relevance though. 7/10 I see they later released a christian rock album called ‘The Jesus Experience’ :tickled:

Great playlist.

you should check the lyrics, one of the best metal bands lyrics-wise and it’s a pretty unique concept album. although, it’s actually a bit of a reach thematically (it’s effectively about a guy’s head being betrayed by his loins haha). anyway it’s cool that you enjoyed it even without the lyrical context.

As regards the other three songs which had come to my mind for this round, my first choice would have been "Betrayed" by Fear of God:

The only reason I didn't submit this song is because I had already submitted a song from the same album just a few rounds before. Those who liked "Red to Grey" should like this one as well. IMO it's one of the three best songs on this album.

Another song which had come to my mind was "Judas" by Helloween:

And the third one which didn't make it was "Spiritual Diary of Oppression" by Drifter. Since there is no single clip of this song, it might have been a bit difficult to fit it into the playlist. It starts at 11:03 in this clip of the full-length album:

Madder Mortem - Traitor's Mark
i've never really delved into them, but this is pretty much what i remember them sounding like from the time i saw them supporting opeth back in 2003.

This means we both saw them on the same tour, but I'd assume you attended the concert because of Opeth, whereas I attended the concert because of Madder Mortem. "Traitor's Mark" is from their second album "All Flesh Is Grass", which was released in 2001, thus it's no surprise that you remember them sounding like this way back then.

Will definitely be checking out the album, though tbh I rarely invest the time to learn the lyrics if the vocals aren't sufficiently intelligible. Eg... None So Vile.
