why do black metallers hate modern Black metal?

The reason I have seen often and that makes sense to me is that in the early days Black Metal had the "Black Metal sound" because of the feelings and ideas that the musicians were trying to portray. the newer more modern bands have the "Black metal sound" because that is what black Metal is supposed to sound like. Instead of creating a unique, powerful, sound with a meaning, they simply make music that sounds like Black Metal.

I suppose it is the equivalent of death metal fans saying DM today has the br00tality and technicality aspect of DM but sorely lacks the passion, the energy and the memorablity of old school DM

Because black metal died in 1996 Im joking, but some poster on this site said that, I don't believe it though.
I like modern black metal, it isn't a dead scene by any means but something about the 2nd wave Norwegian scene captivates me so much more than what I've heard of the modern scene, I don't know what it is but it really makes me want to go out and buy the early Darkthrone and Satyricon Cd's to go with my early Emperor ones. I've heard plenty of modern BM that rivals some of the 2nd wave Norwegian stuff but no scene has quite captivated me like the 2nd wave Norwegian black metal scene.

Nothing really can compare to the Norwegian scene of the early 90s.

Theres a lot of great modern Black Metal bands, Drudkh, Alcest, Deathspell Omega, and lunar aurora. That being said i really prefer BM of the early 90s


personally, i am more disappointed with the modern death metal scene.

Oversaturation is definitely a major problem. I contest that it always has been a problem, but the mediocre bands have faded from memory over time, so we can view the past through rose colored glasses and say that everything was great in the early '90s. Ten years from now, we'll be looking at this period as being strong for black metal because the crap will be forgotten.

If you get good advice, and you know what you like, it's not too hard to find lots of great bands. It's just as easy to find miss after miss though.

I'm in the minority in saying that the best releases of this decade are as good as those from the 2nd wave.

The time period from which a band is from doesn't really affect my liking of them because I don't crave innovation or originality, but good songwriting ability is key to my enjoyment of bands and a lot of modern bands tend not to have much of this ability.

Example? Just because a band is new does not mean that they're "modern."

Nargaroth bitchs all the time about his hatred of "now'n days black metal" but all of his stuff was relased during the 2000's or most of it. Therefor his is apart of "now'n" days black metal.

Malfic has had his fair share of whining(but his music is great) but his music is relased during the modern times.

And to define modern black metal that me say that it is this:anything relased after the end of the second wave of black metal which ended in 1994-1995. Thats how I think of it.

seems to be the mindset of a lot of people

personally, I've loved a lot of post 1995 and even post 2000 black metal albums. like Mort (or somebody said earlier), the awesome to crap ratio is ridiculous nowadays. the amount of crap bands is astronomical, so you're forced to dig deeper and deeper to find the good stuff.

but when you find it...oh man
