Black metal is becoming more known to the mainstream, it has become more accepted, which in the process diludes the whole purpose of its message. Some people like black metal for just the music, but some enjoy the strong ideas behind some bands which can cause many disagreements within the genres fans. The true black metaler enjoys both and follows through with some of the idealogy which usually gets them a place among satans throneroom.
I honestly can't listen to crap like immortal "pure holocaust", that style of BM is not even remotely listenable to me

For me the early 90's sound on albums like In the Nightside Eclipse; Transilvanian Hunger; De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas; Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, etc. is just awesome. LOVE IT!!!

I'd give a response as well but to me the whole issue is just stupid. I will always listen to music I like, be it traditional black metal or the very untraditional. To me it's just a moot point and I feel no reason to debate black metal over and over again, which is why I usually never post in the black metal thread, despite being heavily into the genre.

Just what is melodic bm anyway? Isn't melody a common trait to all black metal, as opposed to death metal, which is more rhythm oriented? To each his own, but I think that album has plenty of melody.
And in response to topic, yeah the Norwegians did it best. Early Greek scene is also worthy of mention.

Just out of curiosity, what post-2000 black metal albums do you find to be of merit? (I know that Summoning's LMHSYF and OB are up there, for sure, and I fully agree) Also, what do you think of Darkspace?

If you think stuff like Pure Holocaust sucks, then you have no idea about Black Metal at all. You are approaching it from completely the wrong angle and not understanding what it is about at all.
I have to agree with this, and it's also why I find many people in this forum so full of it and unable to understand Black Metal properly. Hence the amount of praise for accessible watered down garbage many people seem to love around here.

I judge black metal like I judge any genre of music. Pure holocaust is fucking atrocious, nonstop mindless blasting, some of the worst production I have ever heard, songwriting that is VERY weak. I can't listen to these super raw BM Bands because it just sounds like utter shit to my ears. I don't mind burzum though...

i dont understand black metal properly hubster. its really romantic and sad music and it just doesnt work for me. same with most doom metal and metalcore. i like energetic glam, thrash and death and NWOBHM metal bands that make me want to jump around and get excited. that depressing celtic frost, dimmu borgir (or as i call them damn good burger) cradle of filth, etc, does not work for me. i also am not a fan of the keyboard.

I think it's kind of a status thing really. Black Metal at its core is meant to be elistist, it is anti-metal and is not supposed to confirm to characteristics of more melodic (dare I say "ear-pleasing") styles of metal.
It is an anarchic & outrageous response to all of that, and in some ways, to everything else too.
It's entire concept is inward, self-focusing. Black Metal is meant to be for the few, or the one, not for the many.
Once people realise it was meant to be apart from other styles, that it IS anti-metal, it makes far more sense, even down to the horrendous production values.
