2018 Themed Mixtape Game

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Runner – I was expecting stoner butt metal, not Iron Maiden produced by James Ferraro, this was painful at first but it’s already growing on me, 7/10

Miscreance – Alchemy – total Atheist worship but totally awesome, 9/10

Yob – Ablaze – reasonably good for modern atmosludge until it starts getting overtly sentimental and lame around the last two minutes, 5/10

Sacral Rage – Necropia – disappointing album for me, a big step backwards stylistically from their nimble-yet-thick tech-thrashing debut into a sort of shiny USPM, this song typifies it as well as any, not bad but whatever, 5/10

Mooncitadel - Dance of a Dark Pagan Spell (The Dreaming Equinox) – I had to look up the year in which this late-90s piece of shit was released only to remember once again that I’m stupid, but not as stupid as this song, 1/10

Chemicaust – Vanished – is Vektor old enough now that they have their own retro-thrash followers? although actually once the bridge hits it’s all uphill from there, their drummer is more entertaining than the Vektor one actually, redeemed, 7/10

Sigh - Homo Monini Lupus – generic thrashy shit with Maiden-wannabe melodies with a few gimmicks thrown on, few enough that it took a while to realize I was listening to Sigh or anything with avant-garde pretensions honestly, 3/10

Beyond Creation - Surface's Echoes – decent song, great solo, typical for the genre, 6/10

Teleport - Beholder of the Silent Sea – I enjoyed this EP when I first heard it but this song isn’t doing much for me this time around, too sonically dense, 5/10

Communion - Secret Rites – would’ve preferred a new Communic song, this was just ugly nothing, 3/10

Azusa - Interstellar Islands – prog thrash the way it should be, better vocals than all previous songs on this playlist combined, 8/10

Blood Curse – Isabelle – nice sound and effort but if you’re going to write such a simple 1980 NWOBHM-style song you can at least keep it under 4 minutes, too basic, 4/10

Madder Mortem - Stumble On – a bit too strum-a-strum for me but it’s a nice sound and performance, goes somewhere by the end, 6/10

Manacle - Fight for Your Life – closing the playlist with a great song from a band I’ve never heard of, very nice, vintage feeling but the guitarwork had a little more going on, singer was squeaky in a genuine way, and it wasn’t afraid to close with a brief and sudden climax, 9.5/10

I didn't even remember the 0/10 rule until I had nearly finished the list. It was shit, but it wasn't 0/10-tier.

I feel like his comment on the vocals of the Azusa song makes his rating feel contrarian.

The vox are fucking abhorrent and torpedoed the entire song to the point I can’t remember anything about it except how bad they were.

Not that they're similar at all, but nothing Ghost has released holds a candle to Uncle Acid. The comparison you've made there is a little perplexing to me.

For some reason it reminded me of Ghost's attempt of this heavy metal style on their new 2018 release, and most older Uncle Acid is like stoner/psychedelic rock aside from this, which reminds me of 80s sort of heavy metal.

It made sense to me at a time.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Runner
First time actually listening to UA, and its okay. Vocals aren't as annoying to me as I expected based on some comments here and elsewhere I've seen about them. Music is okay. 5/10

Miscreance - Alchemy
Really blatant Atheist worship that is well done, but the vocals are really grating 6/10

Yob - Ablaze
Overstays its welcome a fair bit - 4-5 minutes of content stretched out to 10 minutes of song 4/10

Sacral Rage - Necropia
Pretty good - was expecting another boring overlong tech thrash snoozefest like Vektor due to the style of the logo, but really enjoyed that 8/10

Mooncitadel - Dance of a Dark Pagan Spell (The Dreaming Equinox)
Some moments this is some of the best black metal I've heard in ages, the rest is really good still 8/10

Chemicaust - Vanished
Eh 6/10

Sigh - Homo Monini Lupus
Sigh really have fallen off a cliff, 5/10

Beyond Creation - Surface's Echoes
Garbage tech death that the usual suspects like, no surprise 3/10

Teleport - Beholder of the Silent Sea
Never heard this band before, but completely in my wheelhouse 8/10

Communion - Secret Rites
Definitely get why @Phylactery said I should listen to them and mentioned Hades Archer as a reference point - good shit 8/10

Azusa - Interstellar Islands
An unfocused mess of a song, nothing I want out of metal 3/10

Blood Curse - Isabelle
The opening section had me hopeful, really got into the riffs, and then the song kept going - not bad, but unremarkable 6/10

Madder Mortem - Stumble On
When the band wasn't trying to be a metal band, it was really quite decent, unfortunately they tried a bit too often 4/10

Manacle - Fight for Your Life
:kickass: 8/10

nice, where are you off to?

Linköping. I've enrolled into a university. Gonna study history for the whole spring term and then after that probably something useful, like civil engineering.

anyway, ratings

Uncle Acid & The Deatbeats - Blood Runner
This song doesn't really go anywhere but I can get behind this sound. Lovely guitar tone, and I have no problem with the vocals.
7/10

Miscreance - Alchemy
I guess I don't really listen to Atheist enough to crave a good Atheist homage, but this is solid.
6/10

Yob - Ablaze

Never heard this band before. This tune has that contemplative, melancholy vibe I love about Ancestors, but the coarse, anguished vocals distinguishes it from that act. I love this. Maybe I'm an unrealized stoner doom aficionado?
9/10

Sacral Rage - Necropia

One of the things I love about this album is how they nail the outros on over half the tracks. This whole song is great but the "DEAD (dead, dead, dead) SPACE (space, space, space) UTOPIAAAAAAAAAA" part is the cherry on the cake. Rating this song less than 7 is a symptom of necropia.
9/10

Mooncitadel - Dance of a Dark Pagan Spell the Dreaming Equinox
what_year_is_it.jpg

3/10

Chemicaust - Vanished

I'm not a thrash person but as far as I can tell this gets more or less everything right for the style it's going for, great vocals, riffs, drumming. Not my cup of tea but too good to downrate.
7/10

Sigh - Homo Homini Lupus

I haven't been able to get through the new Sigh album yet. I got excited when Mirai or whoever manages their facebook account was talking about how everyone was gonna hate their new one, made me think they were at least doing something different, but nah, it's just the same kind of trad metal w/ growls and proggy/"experimental" touches they were playing on Graveward. This song is good though, maybe the only good one, the main riff is super infectous.
8/10

Beyond Creation - Surface's Echoes

I like it.
7/10

Teleport - Beholder of the Silent Sea

This slays.
9/10

Communion - Secret Rites

This is the album that sparked so much debate about whether it was eligible for the 2018 list or not?? I don't understand you black metalers, why would you even want to list this?
3/10

Azusa - Interstellar Islands
5/10

Blood Curse - Isabelle

Pretty amateurish vocals and yeah it's way too long for the quantity of ideas it has, but I can totally get behind this in spirit and that goes a long way.
7/10

Madder Mortem - Stumble On

I like these kind of hand-on-your-shoulder themes in music, life is pretty hard sometimes so people should definitely make music like this. But my favorite parts of this song are the ones that aren't metal at all and the outro is pretty cringey.
5/10

Manacle - Fight for Your Life

This was the only song on the playlist to make me go and instantly check out the album it's from. The whole album kicks ass. I definitely missed this kind of classic, Ryche/FW-inspired metal in 2018.
9/10

I’m obviously not being serious. Never expected him to like Communion or Mooncitadel or Beyond Creation for that matter.

The middling rating for Azusa is wierd though, seems to be something you either love or hate going off every other rating.

I guess that makes me the one person who can see the song from both the 2/3 perspective and the 8/9 perspective.

I can see why people don't like it, just like I can see that some people are born with congenital defects. Doesn't make them right.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Runner 9/10
Probably the best thing they've done since Mind Control.

Miscreance - Alchemy 4/10
Tech thrash is so boring.

Yob - Ablaze 6/10
Might need to actually check out Yob. This ain't bad, but damn 10 minutes?

Sacral Rage - Necropia 7/10
Everyone and their mother has been telling me to check this out. It's ok.

Mooncitadel - Dance of a Dark Pagan Spell (The Dreaming Equinox) 7/10
Definitely some cool parts but ultimately not something I'd ever listen to.

Chemicaust - Vanished 6.5/10
There's plenty of other bands that do this sound better. It's fine.

Sigh - Homo Monini Lupus 6.5/10
Boy, this sure as hell ain't Infidel Art... I guess that main riff in the beginning is cool but this is too "weird" and "experimental" for my tastes. It's ok.

Beyond Creation - Surface's Echoes 4/10
People still listen to this kind of shit? Ugh. Pass.

Teleport - Beholder of the Silent Sea 6/10
Sounds like Portal-lite. I'm really not sure about this. Part of me digs it and another part of me doesn't. I guess there are enough parts I like to warrant a slightly higher-than-middle rating.

Communion - Secret Rites 8/10
Does the quality of the album sound this bad or is it just youtube compression and shit? This is pretty cool. Definitely gonna check this out soon. How is it 2018 again?

Azusa - Interstellar Islands 2/10
I appreciate having a video to watch but this fucking SUCKS.

Blood Curse - Isabelle 8.5/10
Way better than that Sacral Rage song. This RIGHT up my fucking alley. Love it.

Madder Mortem - Stumble On 7/10
I actually don't hate this.

Manacle - Fight for Your Life 8/10
Yeah this band fucking rules.
