2018 Themed Mixtape Game

That Communion song fucking rules. Tear your face off savagery. A modern take on the early South American extreme metal sound (as well as In the Sign of fucking Evil) but it doesn’t sound redundant. Chainsaw riffing and endless blasting, what more could you want?! Occult metal madness. But I don’t think this is the best song on the album.

It’s probably going to come last, or not far from it. As is my pick.

This song is a bit more dynamic than the one from the playlist. And that first scream is amazing.

even if this was more conventionally produced it'd still be one-paced and generic, but yeah hbb's description isn't too far off (i was thinking of ariel pink lol) and it isn't a plus for me here. i actually have a hard time believing their vocals are meant to sound like this, but i dimly recall saying the same about an earlier acid album too. 4/10

Miscreance - Alchemy
the minute from 2:40 onwards is by far the highlight here complete with that at the gates riff, but it's a solid atheist clone at worst. 7/10

Yob - Ablaze

i've always avoided yob; i guess i assumed them to be more of a stoned out groovin' band, not a purveyor of passionate dirges. found this all a bit overwrought and obvious though, right down to the big post-rock climax. 5/10

Sacral Rage - Necropia

not everything works for me here, but its peaks are super high and it's the kind of thing we need more of; a rare band that's able to burst with creativity while maintaining a strong traditional metal foundation. 8/10

Mooncitadel - Dance of a Dark Pagan Spell (The Dreaming Equinox)

lol that one passage reminds me of 'love will tear us apart', i'll have to jump on hbb's black metal is post-punk train. sorry but i don't want to rig the game by praising this on both my accounts (also this is boring). 4/10

Chemicaust - Vanished

doesn't have much personality to distinguish it, but i enjoyed the final minute and a half quite a lot. 6/10

Sigh - Homo Monini Lupus

the album art is amazing, and this song is completely ridiculous. too nonsensical to like, too goofy and catchy to dislike. 5/10

Beyond Creation - Surface's Echoes

surprised to find this actually flows and a number of the melodies are strong; ignore the slick production and their phrasing is quite reminiscent of conjuration-era the chasm. the vocals are ass, unfortunately. 6/10

Teleport - Beholder of the Silent Sea

fairly familiar with this demo already, and to keep with the chasm theme (just for you TB <3) there's some farseeing-era in there, although maybe not so much in this song. i'm not big on this kind of spacey soundscape, but it's a cool sound. 6/10

Communion - Secret Rites

i don't really understand having an extreme reaction to this band one way or another, they're perfectly solid homage to a cool era. it would help if the youtube wasn't dubious quality though, pretty sure that album sounds better than this. 6/10

Azusa - Interstellar Islands

i quite liked the first 30 seconds, then some retard started diarrhoeaing everywhere. 2/10

Blood Curse - Isabelle

baroque isabellend for submitting azusa. 4/10

Madder Mortem - Stumble On

i saw madder mortem live sixteen years ago. now i'm just fucking depressed. this is disappointingly normal for them actually, pretty generic metal ballad before the climax. 5/10

Manacle - Fight for Your Life

quintessential wainds-core. fucking amazing. 10/10

Madder Mortem - Stumble On
i saw madder mortem live sixteen years ago.
That was after the release of "Deadlands" (still my favourite album by them and also one of my overall faves) and must have been when they were supporting Opeth - at least they did so in Germany where I saw them way back then. It took fourteen years until they played here again.

This sounds like you are familiar with (some of) their music and do like at least some of it. May I ask which albums (or specific songs)? "Stumble On" is neither representative of their current album nor of their music in general, but - unlike most others here - I actually do like it. Since their songs head in different musical directions, you might still find something you like on "Marrow".

On another note, I've listened to the entire album of Manacle and I'm thinking about including it in my list for 2018. This might also depend on what the next rounds of this game - I wouldn't mind at least another two - will bring as regards new discoveries, though. Maybe in the end, I'll be able to come up with a top 10.

ha, i'm pleased and surprised you like that manacle so much.

you're spot on about them supporting opeth. i was there primarily as an opeth fanboy, so i wouldn't say i'm very familiar with madder mortem, but i do have an album somewhere, i think DEADLANDS actually. i might even have bought it at the show, i can't remember. i recall finding it intriguing if a little too weird to really get into back then, but maybe i'll give it a revisit.

I was a bit surprised myself. I mean, it's not something entirely new, but maybe there's something specific about the sound I like. I think I read about some comparisons to (early) Fates Warning, among others, and that's something I like.

In my case, this was one of those concerts I only attended because of the support act. I do remember that I did find Opeth's music quite enjoyable, but - as you already know - I'm not a fan of growling and in addition to this, Mikael's clean vocals more than once sounded out of tune/off-key, at least to my ears and at this concert, thus I didn't stay until the end.

It's most likely that it actually is "Deadlands", and even the softest song on that album, the title track, sounds quite different from "Stumble On". I'd say that "Deadlands" is Madder Mortem's overall heaviest album. Even though hardly any of their songs features guitar solos (which are something I usually appreciate), there's something special about their music - not just the voice of their singer -, which makes them one of my favourite bands. Something I like and which is to be found e.g. in songs like "Faceless" and "Silverspine" (both from "Deadlands") or "Breaker of Worlds" (from "All Flesh Is Grass") are those parts where the vocals are only accompanied by bass and/or drums. I also like the often abrupt changes between soft and heavy parts.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Runner - 7/10
not bad at all. You would have to be a major deadbeat to vote this song down but yet praise stuff like communion and mooncitadel

Miscreance - Alchemy- 8.5/10
beautiful

Yob - Ablaze - 8/10
havent listened to these guys in years, but i really enjoyed this. Will most likely get this album.

Sacral Rage - Necropia- 3/10

werent these guys a tech-thrash band? This is some boring generic bullshit with some annoying as fuck vocals thrown in.

Mooncitadel - Dance of a Dark Pagan Spell (The Dreaming Equinox) - 1.5/10

Lol

Chemicaust - Vanished - 8.0/10
Killer death/thrash, will have to look into these guys

Sigh - Homo Monini Lupus - 7/10
This is sigh? Sounds like modern plasticky thrash. not bad at all.

Beyond Creation - Surface's Echoes - 9/10

solid tech-death, best song on this list so far

Teleport - Beholder of the Silent Sea 10/10
god-tier. puts everything else on this list to shame

Communion - Secret Rites 3/10
please give me that 3 minutes back. This is pretty much crap, the track that Box of Foreskins posted by them is much better.

Azusa - Interstellar Islands 7/10
not bad, i think the female clean vox suck though and dont belong

Blood Curse - Isabelle 5/10
this is basically metals version of elevator music. tolerable

Madder Mortem - Stumble On - 3.5/10
no thanks

Manacle - Fight for Your Life 2.5/10
quintessential fag-core. fuckin' sleep inducing, boring, etc from the usual suspect/suspects. I'd rather be listening to that horrendous communion track
